Giving a puppy ear infection drops

Poor Koda has had a rough week. We went in today for shots, and he has an ear infection. It's not bad, with weekly puppy visits it was caught early.

Now here's the problem....Koda is a wimp. A total whining wimp. If you touch him just a little bit rough (while not playing) he whines and whines.

So, you can imagine how giving him ear drops is. He acts like I'm killing him and then gives me the stink eye for an hour afterwards. He literally does this Kai scream that I can't even describe. It's terrible!!!!!

It's not the medicine that he minds. He liked the goopy stuff in there with a little ear massage. He closed his eyes and pushed his head into my hand for more.

It's the drops to clean out the ears. Does anyone have any tricks of the trade they can share with me? I don't know how I'm going to get this done two times a day for a week.

Ruby gets ear infections all the time (Miko licks her ears for hours if we would let her).

What I would suggest is get a wooden spoon, smear some peanut butter on it. Have Koda lick the spoon whilst you are cleaning his ears. This way, something lovely and delicious is happening while his ears are getting cleaned.

Do you mean the flushing stuff where you squirt a bunch in, then hold him still and get it all the way down and then let him shake it out?

It's hard to do on your own because you need to hold his head still, and the bottle of otic solution. He's probably quite wiggly. We used to swaddle the wiggly cats snugly in a towel, but I don't know why I feel so much less worried about restraining the cats (DEAL with it, cat!) than I do about restraining the dogs- esp Sage. Is he small enough that you can hug him firmly while you sit pretzel style on the floor? Then you can use an arm under his head to hold his ear and the other arm behind him to hold the bottle of ear stuff. When I need both hands for something, I smear the peanut butter in a line right on the fridge door at his level and do the torture- I mean medicine, nail trimming, whatever- right there in the kitchen. Then something fun like a walk right after can help him forget about it so you feel less guilty. Less stink eye.

    Poor Koda Kai!

Thanks Jessica and Chrystal. It's the cleaning solution he does not like, but he does love peanut butter and some on a stick would give me the time I need to do it. I can pretzel him, but man is he wiggly. Peanut Butter is Koda's favorite, and it would last long enough for me to clean his ears. He is good with me cutting his nails in the kitchen, so that might be the best place.

I'm getting ready to torture (umm medicate) him now. I'll let you all know how it goes.

You can put him up on a table, like a grooming table, and it may throw him off his guard enough that he doesn't notice what it is you are doing as much. I rarely do anything with my dogs regarding ears, eyes, teeth, nails without putting them up on the table (the grooming table).

Poor Koda. We have no good advice, but I have some healing vibes left over so I'm sending them your way.
