These guys grow up way too fast. Hes a big sweet lug who is happy about everything and loves everybody especially kids and dogs. I think hes a little porky right now, its summer in JP and too hot to run him. Hes pretty much the perfect dog, I've trained him off leash and on, he comes to my english classes with me and everything. I was a little disappointed with him when we went to the firework show here.....he slept throough the whole thing...except the part where he got a hot dog to himself. I wouldn't trade him for anything....I want another...no more Shibas for me I don't think...they just want to run to the end of the earth.

    Oh my, he is precious!

That's right, puppies grow up too quickly. So when Musashi is an adult...you can give him to me and get another Akita puppy -very big grin-.

I love that puppy, puppy pic of him...we shall all die from his cuteness.

Yeah hes a beast. Just go back from the beach a bit ago. He loves romping in the surf and paddling around. Sorry, no, not up for grabs. I am going to keep him intact though, I think I would like to have another one like him when I move back to the states. My wife already wants another one...unfortunately JP houses and property are not conducive to 2 big dogs....it barely works with an Akita and a Shiba. Not to mention...we have to ship these two buggers back to the US with us.

Question: Anyone ever ship a dog from JP? I know the medical requirements, just wondering how you did the actual transport and the costs involved.

Yeah.. we've had to ship Lantis 1x. He's about the same size/weight as an American Akita. Since none of your dogs are small enough, they have to go in cargo. You check them in prior to your flight, hopefully on the same plane you're flying on. And make advanced reservations - most only carry around 4 dogs total in cargo.

You don't necessarily have to make a direct flight, but it is easier all around. You can also opt to ship the dog as cargo completely separate of your flight if you want, too. You may get a better deal (for the humans), say, on JAL but it requires 3 connections. You can ship the dog cargo via Delta on the same day, etc, with the same charge for cargo but not the same charge for the human tickets.

In cargo, it judges by weight and kennel size. For Lantis it was about $700 one way if I remember correctly. This was a few years ago so it may have changed somewhat but you're looking at around the ball park of ~$1000 US. Lantis was about 115lbs. Some airlines like JAL will meet you at baggage claim with your dog, and others require you make a trip out to their incoming cargo facilities. These are usually located in the airport's periphery. Not that far, but no airline shuttle usually goes there. You'll have to get a taxi (or rent a car for a dog the size of an Akita).

Actually, we're going to ship the beasts of burden out before we leave and my parents will pik them up. They have a half acre lot and love dogs. They have all the facilities to pick them up and take care of them. They'll be fat and spoiled by the time we get to them. We're going to spend about a month in Okinawa I think.

I think prices might be lower now due to the cutting of the fuel surcharge BS they were running. I know its actually only 50usd to haul them around domestically.

If you're going to ship separately, I recommend Delta personally. They've always been good to us in shipping our pets.

As for the price - Not sure.. last I got quoted for this winter, our 15lb carrier+dog was $320 one way...

    Domestic or international?
  • edited November -1
International.. Philadelphia Int' to Osaka (Itami) "Int." .. quotes because it's not an international airport. Though the domestic charge from Narita to ITM was around just $20.

Back when he was small enough to do things like this with. We were going to an airshow and were trying to figure out how to get him there.

lol, too cute! How long did he last back there?
  • edited November -1
I gave up before he did. Too heavy and too hot for the trip. He didn't put up a fight in there though.
