Meet the Kai Ken?
http://www.dogage.com/care/tipoftheweek.aspx
If you've never heard of the Kai ken, don't think you don't know your dogs. Hailing from the province of Kai on Honshu Island, the Kai is a rare breed and is deemed a national treasure in Japan. Just what makes this dog so special?
Let's start with his most striking feature. Born black and fuzzy, the Kai's fur turns brindle as he grows and gets older. Because of the coat's color, he is aptly nicknamed "Tora" dog, meaning tiger in Japanese. Along with his distinctive looks, the Kai is a dogged hunter and adventurous athlete known to climb trees and swim streams to pursue his prey.
Quite protective of his "pack," the Kai is a perpetual watch dog. At home, he may sit at the top of the stairs -- or find another high place -- where he can see everything that's happening.
The Kai is extremely fond of and devoted to his family, and he adores kids. Around strangers, though, he can be somewhat shy.
The Kai's high intelligence makes him generally easy to train, and housebreaking is a breeze. When it comes to grooming, the Kai is low maintenance and does not need to be bathed frequently. Light, regular brushings are usually sufficient.

Sage sits as high up the stairs as he can and still be able to watch out the front door. This morning he was being a Library Lion on his haystack, and my daughter went out to sit up there with him before she had to leave for the bus. Its very sweet- her being all cute to him and him being all stoic and watchful.
Thanx for sharing, Jen.
