Name Themes

edited September 2009 in Shikoku Ken (四国犬)
I've been thinking up names for my future puppy and I noticed a lot of you use great Japanese names, which makes sense of course. I really like Japanese names, but my boyfriend wants an English name. So I'm trying to find a Japanese name or other foreign name that doesn't sound too foreign.

My family think I'm an oddball for constantly researching dog breeds and giving my animals strange names. Example: I have two cats, one named Hiroshi and the other Mapache (which is Spanish for raccoon). I also used to have two birds named Toru and Yuki. I love naming animals after some of my favorite Anime characters. I'm just curious to know if anyone has found good name themes. Shikoku are so beautiful and distinguished, so I just want to find a name to fit. Right now I'm thinking of Kaya for a female or Nova for a male or female.

I think lots of people do Anime. My 8 year old niece name Koda. He's named after the Disney character Brother Bear because he has a white spot and he looked like a bear when he was born. :-]

I dont think ne of me pets have "normal" names.

They're not dogs & I know I've posted it before but...

    The 6 cockatiels are;
    Sephiroth [ FF7 ]
    Valentine [ FF7 ]
    Yuki [ anime: Gravitation ]
Gackt [ Japanese rock singer ]
    LuLu [ FF10 ]
Mesa [ is actually a combo of one of my nicknames & me sisters name, me = mema, sa = Sarah ]

    The iguana is Shinra [ FF7 ] & the cat is Halo [ Halo ]. We also had a cockatiel named Cloud [ FF7 ] & another named Dahlia [ X Japan song ].

My future pups will be names after some characters I made up for a novel when I was a kid.

Nova is very pretty :) ~

My Shikoku came already registered with their names: Shoushuu & Yamato Kotomihime.

My Malinois I got to name and it was kinda of a combination from the breeder (Lynx), stud owner (Lynxie) and myself (Lynxiene). I wanted something "medieval" and unique sounding. Something that would relate only to her, as an individual. I already have names that I made up for several of my future forthcoming Malinois but there's too many to list and it's to early to reveal :).

Unfortunely it would seem that I have no say in the naming of my Shikoku imports, but so long as they are unique...I don't mind so much. Just like you though, I'm trying to come up with some Shikoku names for future pups who will born in the U.S., that I will be keeping. So far, I've only come up with 1 name...it sounds Japanese like but apparently unheard of in Japan - Aiyazumi, a female name of course <--- please don't steal it! lol.

My domestic cat names are pretty common names <b>Mia (From Disney's Princess Diaries), Aislyn (Acquired from a baby name meaning on the internet), with the exception of Fiskars (just take a random guess ;) ). When I get my pedigree cats though (Birmans & Siberians mostly), they will have unique names as well.

I had a rabbit once that I named Adonolas. It means "Africa", but I'm not sure in what language, I used it because it sounded cool. I heard it on Animal Planet from one of their TV shows, I think it was a Pet Story with a Hippo!

    --------------

I like both Kaya and Nova!

I have some great Anime character names, if you'd like them...

...not sure if I will use any or not, reguardless, you're welcome to have them. I just need to find my list!

HAHA, OSY, THOSE NAMES ARE GREAT! As you can tell I'm a huge final fantasy fan so when I was readin those names I was cracking up because I had a cockatiel a couple years back and I always wanted to name him CHOCOBO but no one agreed with me...man, my next pet has got to have a final fantasy name...(preferably Cloud :P hehe)

LOL Osy, Sephiroth is my fave FF7 name, but I'm surprised you don't have a Jenova or Aerith in there.

I would love to name a girl pups Asuka, but it would have to wait until a red one comes along.

Tara, why not find a name that is the Japanese pronunciation of an English name (like how my name in Japanese would be pronounced Besu), that way you both get what you want.

WOW! I like the FF7 names.

I didn't even consider that Katja might name her pups, or is that only the ones that come from Japan? I niticed that Brad and Jen named their dogs Loa and Aki, so maybe Katja doesn't name pups.

Loa and Ahi both have a registered name that they came with from Katja. We just gave them common names, and call them by those. Ahi's registered name is "AKASHIMA’S KOCHI-KEN BAKURA" and Loa's registered name is "AKASHIMA’S KOCHI-KEN ETSU".

Excluding Fuji, all our Nihonken's common names are Hawaiian. We kept Fuji's name because we didn't mind it, and, frankly, we are running out of Hawaiian words/names that were short enough and easy enough to say to be a dog's name.

Luytiy came with his name, we actually planned to call him Pax, but decided to keep his name as it fits better. Masha was named after a Russian story: "Masha And The Bear".

Blue, well, I think that one is obvious. lol

Are the registered names the ones you call them when they are in trouble? Like when parents call their kids with their first and middle names? :)
...and all the other dogs say "ooooOOooo your'e in Trou-BLE!!!"

LOL @ Chrystal >_< I laughed so hard.

On the topic of naming...I like choosing names that seem a good culture fit for the breed, but I also like fantasy/random names. hehe My first pet was a hermit crab named VaderCrab...let's not count that one okay?

Kitsune - My rescued pup of awesome...naming is pretty obvious...it's the Japanese word for fox, although 'Dingo' might have been more appropriate.
Gandalf - He's a grey parrot...I came up with the name in middle school so don't make fun of me lol
Kimchi - A bearded dragon...when I got her she had a very ...spicy... personality so I started calling her Kimchi...it stuck.
Spookley - A goldfish...named after Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Prometheus the Second - A betta fish...he had firey colors.
Pikel Icingdeath - A blue betta fish...I like giving them very masculine/tough names lol...these are from R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books (nerd!)

Great names. While I don't have a Nihon Ken yet, and I would be getting a girl these are the names I like

    Aiko - beloved
    Hoshi - star
    Cho - butterfly

Though I've always wanted to get a boy and name him Yoshimitsu.

I am beginning to this Ahi's name should've been Pele.. lol ;)

To Osy - LOL! It's cool to have another Final Fantasy fan here. I grew up with FF series. Great names. You probably can name all the dogs you have with names from the FF series. The first FF I played was on SNES and the main character names are Cecil and Kain. There is always a Cid character in the series. Of course, chocobos and mogs are common too. I just fell in love with the epic journey of the main characters.

Gackt is pretty cool too in that movie Moonchild I think.

I am tempted to name pets with characters in childhood anime like
    -Doraemon
-Arale and Gatchan in Dr. Slump
-Hattori and his ninja dog Shishimaru in Hattori-kun
    -Tetsujin
    -Ryo in City Hunter
    -Any Thundercats name
-Any Hayao Miyazaki character name like Totoro, Pazu, Nausicaä, Kiki, etc.
-Any old school Anime characters who are endearing to you

Let us know what you pick eventually.

I wanted to name Sage "Pazu" initially, but I thought it sounded too much like "Potsy" (Happy Days) for common public wear and tear. So I went with Seiji Amasawa from Whisper of the Heart. I guess my someday girl pup will need to be Shizuku, then, to go with Seiji.

    AND...
if she's a shikoku she can be Shizuku Shikoku...

:) Fox in Socks on box on knox and all that.

I like my animals to have different vowels: RI-lee, SAY-gee, LO- kee

I think I've finally decided on two possible names that I'll probably stick with.

Kaya for a girl or Niko for a boy. I was really searching for something not already taken by too many people on the forum. I think Niko might be pretty popular, but I really like the sound of it. I think I'll stick to two sylabel names, so it will be easier for my pup to remember plus easier to use during training.

It's so hard to be patient in my wait for my shikoku pup! I'm trying not to bug the breeder too much with updates, plus I have a feeling that I'll hear about new shikoku puppies here on the forum first anyways. At least I can gaze at all these cute puppy faces on the forum.
