Kai Ken Aigokai Tenrankai - Fall 2009 (short vids added)

edited October 2009 in Kai Ken (甲斐犬)
Just got back an hour ago from the Kai Ken Aigokai Tenrankai in Yamanashi. A bit of a drive, but was an absolutely surreal and amazing day.

Will post more later, but just wanted to throw some pics up. I apologize in advance for the quality of the pics. Was using a new cam, and have not had time to cheat and touch up the photos yet :P

I've got a couple hours worth of video to edit, with some pretty cool clips I'm sure everyone will get a kick out of. I met some amazing people and dogs today.

I'll post in depth on my blog later, but in short...

I drove up to Yamanashi early this year, had a chance to meet some people and relax a bit more than I usually do at the Tenrankai.

It was an overcast and seriously chilly day. I was out there in my hunting jacket and stiff felt the bite. Overcast = no view of Mt.Fuji :(

There were over 150 Kai entered this year, everything actually had to be sped up (including the judging!).

Several of my friends were showing dogs this year. Inoue-san from Inoue-So was showing 3 of his, including Riki, Haru's dad. Okuno-san from Toraume-So was showing Tsuki (a gorgeous female kuro-tora). Riki and Tsuki were being shown in the 'Sogo-Yuryo' which is basically the overall champion. Dogs that have placed higher than 3rd place in previous shows are eligible to compete for overall champ.

This year Tsuki took overall female, and Riki took overall male. I was laughing and jumping around like a maniac seeing as I was rooting for them both. Then they went up against each other for overall champ, and Riki took that, sending Inoue-So home with the big flagpole trophy.

This was at the end of the day, after Inoue-san and his dogs tacked up some impressive numbers. All of his dogs placed in their respective groups. I kept teasing him that he was getting too greedy, then we had the big win at the end.

All in all, a wonderful day, and after getting pretty much no sleep for the past 2 nights, I'm off to bed!

    Beautiful.

    Haru's half sister is gorgeous.

    Great to see these pictures!
Again - I love the akatoras. Beautiful!

Seems to be sexual dimorphism in kai? the girls look so soft and round and the boys so angled. Or maybe its just different families.

In the first pic of the second batch, the dog's rear left leg is really extended so the knee and ankle are extremely straight- can all dogs do this? Is it a nihon ken thing? Other show dogs parked out still have an angle or two...must go look in my dog books. Reilly certainly doesnt do that, but Sage does. I thought he had bad joints or something, but maybe its a heritage trait.

The first Kai in the latest batch of images is just about the most awesome thing I have ever seen.

    A short vid of Ikoro, Haru's half-sister.

A video of the first Kai SAR dog named Suguri and his owner/trainer, Dr.Yamashita. Suguri is retired and is 13 years old now, but they agreed to humor me and parade in front of the camera for my blog :)

They're all so beautiful! The red brindle Kai are gorgeous. All this Kai spam is making me want to get a Kai after my shikoku pup. Sadly, I don't think my boyfriend wants more than one dog :(

I agree with Brad on that last set of pics. That Kai is amazing!!!

Tara, boyfriends are replacable dogs aren't! lol

A friend of mine just told me that his last girlfriend before his wife had said to him "I think we should take the dog back to the shelter! He is just too much" He dumped her immediately and kept the dog. Too quote Liz Lemon "DEALBREAKER". It is hard to be a crazy dog person if your partner isn't one. But there is always hope, I converted Jay. You can convert your boyfriend.

Don't worry Tara! There's hope. I'm slowly but surely working on my hubby for a 2nd dog. At first he was adamantly no but now he's talking about how there's a store that is a further drive from our usual store would be cheaper to get food if we had 2 dogs. LOL

I'll work on it! He'll be going to some puppy training classes with me when I get my Shikoku. I'll be doing most of the work though, like taking the puppy out in the morning, coming back at lunch time . . . etc, but I'm hoping he'll bond and find a little dog craziness in himself.
