Sage announces that he caught a squirrel

Sage wants me to tell everyone that he actually caught a squirrel yesterday. It was a very stupid deathwish squirrel to run up and sass a leashed dog. Long version of the story on the brindle blog.

Although he didn't mind me checking it out, and was perfectly calm about the post-kill ceremony, I let him keep it for a bit to see what he'd do. He didnt eat it or play with it. He carried it home, dug a hole and cached it- then came in the house, went over to Reilly's bowl and ate the breakfast she hadn't touched from earlier.

Isn't that weird? "Don't eat the squirrel, cache it and go eat some kibble." Even weirder when you consider we are feeding a raw meal each day now, including meaty bones, so he knows what to do. Reilly consumes any rabbits, mice etc. (not snakes or moles)- but Sage won't. He's missing an FAP or something.

    LOL. Silly Sage.

Maybe he knew it wasn't raw meal time, so he was saving it for later? ;-)

I knew a Jindo that used to catch and eat rats. When his owner switched him to Wellness (much better food than what he had before), he continued to catch the rats but stopped eating them.

Maybe Sage knows he's getting the easy, good stuff at home. It can be a pain to de-fur a squirrel afterall. :-)

LOL!!! I love the picture! :-D

You know, Bella will do that... If she catches and kills something she just kind of carries it around for a few minutes, then leaves it alone.
Nola on the other hand will eat it in a heartbeat... I have to be careful with her.

"it can be a pain to de-fur a squirrel after all"

That all sounds plausible. We do feed him very well, raw/real food in the mornings and grain free kibble in the pm meal. I guess he knows where his metaphorical bread is buttered. :)
Catching squirrels is more fun that eating them I guess, if you have a choice and don't have to eat them to live. Or maybe he knew the squirrel was nuts- (ha!)- and would taste sick somehow, and was just begging to be deselected.

<<Reilly adds that fresh young rabbits however are just plain tasty and lack the huge, annoying tails of squirrels. No fuss.
