Koshi

I thought I should give a little Koshi update. Koshi has been a family member for a little over 2 weeks now. I have to say she has been a great puppy. The relationship building with the shibas has been challenging.
On week one Koshi gravitated to Gin right away almost to the point of obsession many times I had to end the constant harassment that Koshi inflicted upon Gin . As time progressed The obsession seemed to go away & healthy play is developing nicely.
The relationship with Levi was much more difficult, he was very intolerant of her for a week & a half. Truth is he would try to attack her every chance he could get. However things have improved greatly between them & they now play at least twice a day.
Things are really going great at this point. Koshi is learning the routine around here very quickly & the relationship with the three dogs is great compared to week one.
I started Koshi in puppy class last Sat. & she is really doing great !@
here's a couple photos .

Thanks for the update, I was wondering how things were going.

Glad that the Shibas are doing better with Koshi. And I am glad Koshi has gotten used to the daily routine.

Oh, and I definitely think we need more pictures. Koshi is super cute. :)

    Hi David,
What a beautiful shikokugirl you have...just adorable. Keep the pictures coming...not too often that one can see a shikoku pup :)

    Hey David,
Koshi is developing really well. She looks very nice, actually even better than when you just got her. Wow, very nice! It's amazing how fast they can change color and pattern, you made a very good choise. I will try to shoot some pics from Shousei as well, we have snow right now. He's growing really fast. Good to know Koshi is doing better with the Shiba's too. Here it is getting better, but not so fast. Outside much better than inside.

    Hey Nico,
I am really glad things are atleast moving in a positive direction for you with the three pups. It started the same way here & the it was like a switch went off one day & Levi began to play with her. Things are not perfect & Koshi doesn't know when to just stop playing & harassing but things I would have say are very good so far. I'll bet the huskies will be similar & just suddenly accept Shousie as part of the pack.Measure success against the day before and then the week before:) I just got a new camera so as soon as I learn how to use it, I'll hopfully post some better pics.

Hey Dave, yup, a nice camera is very useful in catching the moments of fun and beauty. We started a new post with pics of Shousei in the snow. The other one was getting a bit long and slow, it took to much time to get till the end of it.
Shousei still eats and drinks a lot and is not yet 100% clean in the house. It seems he's a bit difficult in holding up his stuff, needs to get better toilet trained. Reno & Rico are masters in this. They also don't drink too much where Shousei seems a bit opportunistic in this matter. He eats and almost drinks all he can get.

Great picture :)) and it does look like 2 shikokus :)) at least the color part...
Koshi is really such a nice girl, very similar in color with my Kekko

It is going to be really difficult when we take all three to festivals trying to explain that Levi & gin are shibas & Koshi is a Shikoku!

I think what makes Levi so deceivingly shikoku-like (in a beautiful way) is 1.) His sesame coloring 2.) how low his sesame coloring reaches down on his face (below his jaw line).

    You have a beautiful pack.

    Hey Dave/Vicki,
Your dogs look pretty despite being in mid-coat blow. *sigh* Sometimes I miss being in snow.

Wow, cool Dave that they are going along very well now. It gets better here as well, but a bit slower I guess. Shousei is trying out to much, but we will be patient. I love your natural environment, nice house :-) We had snow for just a few days, to bad it's melting away now already. Koshi is looking nicer with every new picture you post!

    Thanks Nico,
The pack is really getting along great now! Koshi is a wonderful pup.I'm really glad things are coming along with your pack also pretty soon you will have one very happy family, it just has to happen in their time frame .Stay patient I fully understand that anxious feeling and always being at a high state of alert 100%of the time.Walking the dogs all together goes along way ! Have a great Christmas if I don't chat with you before!!!!

They look great together! Koshi's coat is looking really nice too - getting dark. I'm sure she loves running and playing in the snow on all that property you have - lucky dogs.

    Thanks Brad,
Koshi definitely loves the snow especially when both Levi & Gin really crank up the play to a level 10. We have invisible fence around the yard so the dogs perimeter is about an acre. Koshi learned the Inv. fence great, I 'm staying optimistic but guarded that she will always respect the lines ....so far it's been perfect. I found that inv fence really works great here, especially if you start them at a very early age & train them properly. The shibas also help tremendously :)

    Hey Dave and Vicki,
I hope you had a great Christmas with your family and K9's. I have a question for you… How well does Koshi listens to her name now? We kind of feel Shousei is not yet really paying a lot of attention when called. He listens but somehow, not as much as we were expecting. So he lived his first 3 months in Japan, like Koshi right? Last night we put a DVD on tv and watched the beautiful movie: Spirited Away from Miyazaki. This is a famous Japanese Cartoon, but so beautiful. Sometimes, when dogs are on tv, Shousei pays attention, however normally he leaves the tv and just continues doing whatever he was doing. Now we started the movie with Japanese voices and he right away watched the TV and clearly moved his head like he was carefully listening like he recognized the Japanese voices. It might be a coincidence but it was like his hearing is still focusing on Japanese voices. Have you ever experienced something like this?

    Hey Nico,
That's really funny you should bring this up:) We are having the same experience with Koshi. She really seems as if she has no clue that her name is Koshi. As far as the tv ,she's the same as Shousei at least as far as dogs & animals go .I can't say that we've actually watched anything that has had Japanese dialoge though. Isn't it strange how their behavior is so similar?
The movie Spirited Away, is it all in Japanese?

Here the movie can be set in both Japanese and Dutch, so I guess, you should be able to find it in English and Japanese. There are more very nice movies in this series. But you should try to set it in Japanese and read English subtitles. It really was amazing how he was paying attention to the sound. I will try again with an other movie and keep you posted on the results.

we have that movie and we can watch it in japanese or english. We have alot of japanese movies that are that way.
  • edited November -1
That's kind of interesting with Shousei's response to the Japanese dialog, have you tried seeing if he responds to commands given in Japanese? Or teaching him the 'sit' command in Japanese and Dutch, and seeing if he gives a better/quicker response to one over the other?
  • edited December 2009
We haven't tried it both ways, just in Dutch, and he responses well to it. But his name remains a mistery, why isn't he hardly listening to it? Maybe it takes a bit longer I guess. But kind of weird Koshi shows the same behaviour. Or is it normal, even with pups born in the US, that they don't respond too fast, like within a month, to their names?
  • edited November -1
I bet he would respond if you took a handful of tiny tasty treats and spent five minutes at a time 3 or 4 times a day doing nothing but saying his name and giving him a treat: "Shousei!" (treat). "Shousei!" (treat). I would think that after a few lessons like that, he'd come running to his name from anywhere (if he liked the treats enough). The way to a pup's heart (or head) is through his stomach....... :)

Maybe he needs some one-on-one time with you. Apart and separated from the other dogs, just you and him.
