Marion,
I've been working on just that, it works for a little while but Koshi is NOT food motivated ,after the first few treats. I've tried dif. kinds of treats to see if that would motivate her but to no luck. I could get the shibas to drive a car for a treat, but Koshi could care less if you waived a side of beef in front of her.It doesn't even matter if she hasn't eaten in hours.
If she has a favorite toy she loves, you can sub it for the treats. I have a shiba that is not food motivated, but loves a tennis ball. I use the tennis ball as a reward instead of a treat.
That's funny about listening to the Japanese sounds ) but I guess it makes sense. Puppies do pick up a lot during their first few months and if these are spent in Japan, its normal I think they feel these sounds are familiar, specially as they are so different from European way of talking. Kekko did learn his name quite quickly - it did not matter that he was called Kei before he came to us. I did call him after his name a lot and also did the food trick, also before giving him his meal I make all dogs look into my eyes before giving the food, and also saying their names. Don't worry about the name thing, it will come. Just try calling the pup his/her name a lot, specially if there is something you know he/she wants...it can be whatever - food, toy, hug...just anything. At least in a month both of them will know the names perfectly )
We tried it again with an other Japanese movie (the old Hachiko) but he didn't respond to it like the last time. Just to keep it synthific :-) otherwise it would have only been about one time… However, he is adapted much better now, both tolerate him, with a certain distance. Today he even had a "fight" with an other 9-month old puppy. That was just fine for both; they should learn there are borders and not all can be crossed. The big guys obviously don't fight with him, just corrections, they are still way over double his weight and both can handle some stress from a small puppy.
.I just thought I'd post a couple new shots of Koshi .She is really growing up to be a fabulous pup. Her personality is so great...we couldn't be happier.
At first I thought that was her with the white toy in her mouth as the other two were giving chase. Then I thought, "That can't be right, she's still a pup." Then I realized Levi was the one in the lead and she was trailing the other two:).
Great shots. I love seeing Nihonken in the snow. They look like they just "belong". I *almost* feel bad for wanting one to live with me in Sunny Southern So Cal.
Dave, Koshi is getting so nice, wow, absolute improvement from the first images I saw from her. Your pics are getting much better too :-) Keep on practising so we can see more nice pics from Koshi and the others !!
Thanks Stina!! We feel so fortunate, it was a huge gamble for us. I am so happy with her markings , but even happier with her temperament she is confident ,affectionate,& so smart! She has really bonded with me & I love that! She even gets along great with her shiba companions too How is Kekko doing?
How did I miss all this? I need to stop checking the forum from my iPhone. I missed beautiful Koshi pics. Her coloring is getting to be really amazing.
That's great Dave, that all your pack is getting along now. Its so much fun to watch them play, I know . Kekko is doing just great, cannot believe he is going to be a year old soon already....time flies. That's really a shame you live so far, I would so much like to see Koshi in live action .
Nice photo Dave, very nice, great composition, you got plenty of snow there. Koshi is doing really well, her color and markings are great. The future will be very interesting since they tend to change a lot. It is kind of impossible to make an educated guess picking a puppy. You really did a good job there.
Thanks Nico,
Trying to get good photos is so difficult. I am such a novice & there are so many great photographers, like yourself , it's a little (or very )intimidating . I changed the settings as per your advice on dog photography! We have about 14 inches of snow right now with really cold temps it was about 2 degrees when I took that shot ,so if it looks a little out of focus ...I was freaking cold & shaking HA Ha!! :)
As for picking Koshi I honestly had no real choice I relied completely on my friend who went to Japan and brought her back for me. She is very knowledgeable in Japanese breeds & she breeds & shows her Shibas at the Nippo show. I am so grateful to her.

The countdown begins...you have 24 hours, then I'm going to steal her & she'll be mine ~

The last pic of just Koshi, with her tongue out,she just lost her last baby tooth at that moment!
I think, when I get a pup, I want to find the lost baby teeth & make a necklace. LMAO [ j/k ] ~
