Shoushuu: Training Under Distraction

These photos were taken by me earlier on this past week. Shoushuu has gone through a lot of changes growing up. Looking back at his photos from his "younger days" one can distingush infant puppy from "child" pup and adolescent pup from young adult. I think he's starting to look more like a "man" now. Give him about another 6-9 months or so...and he'll be a full fledged adult Shikoku male =).

Hello Corina, I think he looks really nice, maybe a bit more weight and he's all there. Shousei is so far away from this point, but in a year or so… How old is Shoushuu now? The 3th pic is kind of funny the way he's running ;-) , the 4th is really nice!

He has gained only 3 lbs within the past few months (So he currently weighs 44 lbs). He's 6 pounds LIGHTER then my Malinois, lol. We'll continue to see how he matures. I do tend to keep my dogs a tad bit on the lighter side but Shoushuu eats about 2 cups to 2 1/2 cups of kiblets per day...we switch back and forth from kiblets to raw food...he's not a big eater though...

Shoushuu is 2 years, 3 months and 15 days.

LOL, in the 3rd and 4th photos he is just standing there, kicking up the grass and dirt he just marked. I guess he is just wiping his feet in case he accidently got pee on them =p. This guy has to leave his scent on EVERYTHING! So yeah, those 2 photos are just "clips" of that motion.

I'm not very good with a camera though. I still need to learn angles, lighting and proper positionings of the dog. I could be doing my dog a dis-service by taking horrible photos! Shoushuu is a tough dog to just even take pictures of...he won't stand still long enough. So all these shots of him are very natural! A lot of them I just snapped quickly and hoped for some great photos. My digital camera has a 5 sec delay so some of the poses I wanted I wasn't able to capture cause he moved!

Corina, it looks like you use a bit to much the wide angle setting. This may cause a bit of distortion, like in the first image. His head appears a bit to big in ratio to his back end. The photo's are nice though, just try to use a bit longer lens setting. And sometimes you miss his feet, to many things to watch. It's a pain with thoose camera's who have such a big delay. I guess that's the biggest benefit of the DSLR's and the newer compacts.

LOL at #3. I love pee kicks! All 3 of mine now have their own versions of it.

    Corina,
    I absolutely love shoushuu's markings.....he's beautiful!!!!

He looks really good Corina! He does look older & more mature... I still remember him as that silly puppy that Loa fell in love with. lol.

Gosh, what a pretty looking guy he is becoming. Bet you get comments at the park about him.

Yes, I got a laugh out of #3 pee kicks. Sukoshi (female shiba) does this w/ heavy ground scratches after pooping.

He's beautiful Corina!!! Koda gets skinny too. I just think our nihonken don't like to eat much honestly.

So, Shoushuu will breed in the future right? He will make some beautiful puppies.

Beautiful pictures Corina! The Shikoku tend to be skinny as it seems...any of you seen a fat Shikoku? My Kekko eats very good and the amounts are same as for my siberians (although he is smaller), but he is still quite thin and very sporty. Maybe its the activity level they have, just moving around so much, that does not matter how much they eat.....

    Thanks everyone!

Tara - Yes, someday..."we" will have Shoushuu puppies! He's pretty much ready to breed now, just got go get those hip, patella and elbow x-rays...I've been lagging on that =(. Kotomi won't be ready to breed until next year (2011)...I don't plan on breeding her until she's 3 years old, maybe 2 1/2 years at the earliest.

Stina - I think Shikoku have a FAST Metabolism =). Sometimes I will give Shoushuu and Kotomi each an extra half cup to a cup of kibble multiple times per week (depending on activity) and they still look the same, LOL.

The high metabolism seems to be carried in some Shikoku lines. Apparently it's more prevalent in Hongawa (Choshun), whereas Shikoku from Hata lines can tend to get overweight if not properly exercised. This is what I was told by one of the Nippo judges. I'll have to get some video of my friend's male sometime, as that dog is nuts. Gorgeous musculature, you can see his muscles ripple as he moves, and he doesn't really get that much exercise.

Awaiting OFA rating...but I got Hips and Patella done today on Mr. Shoushuu...he is "normal" for both! If I can get my disc to work, I'll try and upload a photo of his Hip x-ray.

Are you planning on a thyroid test as well?
  • edited November -1
There's a Breeder Health Discount Clinic coming up in July at my vets, I'll decide then what else to test. They also have OFA on Cardiac. I still have to do OFA on Elbows and CERF on eyes!

Eventually, I want to also do OFA on Shoulders and x-ray on Spine...but I am not sure when I will get those done. Just little by litte so I don't end up with a large bill at once, lol. It gets expensive...especially if you bring in multiple dogs.

Granted this isn't our best obedience session but we were at public park and there was something MUCH more interesting then training, lol.

I wanted to keep his attention span as best as I could so back to puppy basics! He actually did pretty good for not paying attention...the little jerk but I guess I can't really argue...he performed the behaviors!

I will have to get some off-leash Obedience vids once I'm able to corrupt someone into filming it without being too much of a distraction =p.

    Good job Corina!

Are you teaching him in German commands?

    Jesse
  • edited November -1
    Nice!!!
  • edited November -1
    Jesse,

Yes, I taught him in German. I started out with Japanese but then I kept yelling out the wrong commands between dogs. If there ever was a dire situation in which I can't think straight and need my dogs to listen...it's best if I blur out the correct commands in the target language! lol. So I train all my dogs in German =). There are a few exceptions though in which I use English...mostly for "trick pet behaviors".
