Joint supplements for akita

Clearly, akita are prone to HD. In most cases, environmental causes are the ones that cause or worsen joint problems. I am currently fighting with dog owners about keeping their dogs on slippery surfaces, but many a times it's a lost battle.

My dog suffers from joint problems (not HP but a weird combination of loose ligaments and absorbtion deficiency that sent me to the vet/x-ray specialist more times that I can remember) and I've tried almost every product on the market.

The best products that we can find in this region are Nutriflex and Megaflex http://www.rxvitamins.com/pet/index.php I will mention the other products I've tried but I am not sure if they are familiar to you - caniviton high density and force, k9 complete motion, aplazyl and bomazeal.

I've discovered that whatever has Perna Canaliculus (Green lipped mussel) extract, especially in freeze dried form has an immediate impact on the dog's movement.

A very interesting vitamin I've been fortunate to come across is Ester C http://www.ester-c.com/ It allows for a much better absorbtion of vitamin C which is crucial for the development of ligaments and tendons. Here is an article of how ester c might be used in cases of HD, I'm not sure if it's a lot of BS but it can't hurt. http://www.workingdogs.com/doc0039.htm

I've discovered a new product in UK which combines green lipped mussel extract with glucosamine and a friend of mine is trying it on her AA, I can't say anything about results at the moment.

Last but not least, I am a strong supporter of shark cartilage and I try to feed my akita calves' throats whenever I can find them.

Any other wonder drugs out there that can make a radical improvement?

PS: I apologise if it's been discussed elsewhere, I couldn't find a topic

This is a supplement that Brad has recommended to me when my dog had knee reconstruction. I know he swears by it.

I also have used this supplement at the suggestion of my dogs nutritionist and chiropractor (yes they have a nutritionist chiropractor, and I know I am nuts).

OMG! A nutritionist chiropractor??? Where can I get one of those? LOL Don't worry, nuts is totally acceptable when talking about taking care of our dogs. Thanks for the links, I'll investigate!

Where are you located? I can see if she has someone she would recommend in your area. There aren't many so they tend to be a close knit community.

Thanks Jessica, that's really sweet of you, but I am sure there's no nutritionist OR chiropractor in Central/Eastern Europe. :-( But it would be interesting to read what they have to say about akita. Is there such a topic?

I know my doctor has treated a couple American Akita who practiced agility.
