Wow, that does look like a Kai. I have seen some Shepherd crosses that end up brindled and smaller than most Shepherds who strongly resemble Kai's, but when seen up close you can tell they are not.
She could be. Did the person who posted tell you that she wasn't? Looks like she has a black spot on her tongue, although there are many other breeds that have this. It's her ears that make her seem to me like she may be.
Just because it's brindled, doesn't means it's a Kai. It's a dominant gene. Even PUGS carry the brindle gene. Although it depends on the genetics. Golden Retrievers can carry the brindle gene, but it's not seen in them because the recessive yellow/red (ee) masks any possible colour.
However I don't think that is a Dutch Shepherd-- the ears are a bit off.
Kais don't have blue on their tongue. They have black spots. ;-) @Saya you really need to come to Cali someday and visit us! I would love it. And you can see Koda and Mei's black spotted tongues. he he
I wasn't talking about the dog's brindle. Although that dog's brindle is amazing! The ears are just off for a sheperd. My grandmother bred sheperds. I grew up with like 20 following me around at once. The ears happen to be more like my Kais. Just saying. I don't know what the dog is, but it would be good to find out more about her personality.
Her back legs don't look like a Shepherd either. Too straight. Also usually the brindle is more uniform with a Shepherd. I actually could go on about why I don't think this dog is a full Shepherd. I would expect all this more in a Kai. Again I have no idea what she is, but I can see why Casey thought Kai. I would have questioned the same thing.
No, she sent me some clearer photos of the dog's face. She is beautiful, but most definitely not a Kai. I will see if I can save the photos to post.
ETA:
The girl said she is fairly young, less than a year. I suggested that she take her to the vet to have her scanned for a chip. I also gave her contact info for a Shepherd rescue in the area.
I'd love to visit California got some cousin's there. I think Saya would enjoy the beach and stuff.
I'd love meet Kai ken up close then I'd just need to meet an American Akita and Japanese Akita, and kishu, Hokkaido.. lol
Still not sure if I want a Kai ken or Hokkaido as second dog. I love Kai ken would be easier to get and meet the breed, but Hokkaido dog seems interesting.
lol... Yeah, definitely Shepherd ears. But that first picture (the one in the CL ad) really had me thinking Kai. I guess it is amazing how much a little detail in a photo can make a difference. I think she will find a good home, if she does not already have one. I was a little flabbergasted that the girl had not had her scanned for a chip before she tried to get rid of her.
Friend of mine had linked this to FB and I started to think that this one might be more Kai mix instead of schipperke http://www.adoptapet.com/pet6235509-ss.html. What do you think? I have seen lots of Schipps but never that big one.
Thank you for contacting us. Gylfie is completely black; no brindle or brown on him at all. He weighs approximately 29 pounds. He was found as a stray in Pueblo where we are located. I just made him available for adoption this morning and we will try to find him a home for as long as it takes.
Please let me know if I can answer any other questions for you.
Ditto Araks. He may not have any brindle but he looks a lot leggier than most Shibas and his head shape reminds me more like the Kai head shape than the Shiba (to me).
My shiba was 35 lbs. Schipperkes should be below 20 lbs. Minus the sickle tail, and the photo quality, there is a chance. I wonder what they will say if we ask for a photo of its tongue.
My male Shiba is 40 pounds, and my female is 32, so there are some monster Shibas out there indeed! (Some people might say they are ALL monsters! ) I'm certainly no Kai expert, so I have no idea, but that dog also looks a bit like the chow x I had years ago...

I have already emailed the posted asking for a better photo and a more detailed description. Any thoughts?

I guess this forum would get the most kai related traffic though
I always thought Schipperkes were more fluffy.
