Dog Behavior / Canine Psychology Books

edited April 2010 in General
Looking for some reading material. I know we had an old thread on this, but I'm sure tons of new books have come out & I'm not sure if the older books are outdated.

---

Looking for some books on Dog Behavior / Canine Psychology you all could recommend.

I own:

How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With by Clarice Rutherford
----> I liked this book a lot as it explains the various stages of puppy development, beginning from when they're a day old up until adulthood. [ really recommend it for those who are considering breeding ]

Good Owners, Great Dogs by Clarice Rutherford & Sarah Wilson
-----> Meh. Nothing special. Not a big fan of this book.

Before You Get Your Puppy by Ian Dunbar
-----> Liked a lot of the ideas in here.

After You Get Your Puppy by Ian Dunbar
-----> Also pretty good.

I'm kind of sick of the "how to" books which, for the most part, say the same things and don't want any more of those. Would love some more reading material about the way dogs think / react / respond / behave, rather than "do xyz."

Thanks guys :) ~

Just wanted to add, I also read the "Monks of New Skete" book The Art of Raising a Puppy but I returned it for some reason. [ 3 years ago ] I remember I didn't like it, but I can't remember why now lol [ was that the book that supported Alpha rolling??? ] ~

Anything by Patricia McConnell (The Other End of the Leash), Jean Donaldson (Culture Clash) Kevin Behan, (Natural Dog Training)

Dogs by Raymond and Lorna Coppinger is a great read about dog origin, behavior and evolution.

I would recommend "The Nature of Animal Healing" by Dr Martin Goldstein for health, disease, vaccination and food info-very readable-

and the "The Whole Dog Journal Handbook of Dog and Puppy Care and Training"

off the top of my head.

I second Jessika's suggestion of Patricia McConnell and Jean Donaldson. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jean Donaldson.
Pat Miller is another good one, and Karen Pryor too.

I'll 2nd Jessika's mention of Raymond Coppinger, while not a behaviorist, Ray & Lorna Coppinger have some really interesting views and ideas on canine behavior. In their books they tend to examine the underlying programming of breeds which I find to be very helpful in understanding them. I'd mos def keep them at the top of your list.

Thanks guys! I'll probably put in an order for a few of them from amazon within the next few days.

If anyone thinks of anything else, let me know :) ~

Patricia McConnell's book, "The Other End of the Leash" should be standard reading for any dog owner. I love her insight and examples of dog behavior that is often overlooked or misunderstood (i.e. whale eye, snake lick, wagging tail, patting on the head, etc.).
