DAP Police Dog Study

edited May 2010 in Behavior & Training
This is a study that was done on police dogs in Austria using Dog Appeasing Pheromones. I found it very interesting as I use a DAP collar on Kohji in conjunction with other things to decrease his thunderstorm anxiety and have used DAP plug-ins in the past.

Now I want a DAP collar.

The collars are the most effective for anxiety therapy and were recommended to me over the spray or plug-ins. They work for up to 4 weeks, need to be kept clean and dry and are adjustable. Do you ever see them being used in the shelters you volunteer at Jess?

Interesting study. In a shelter situation, maybe if the most highly stressed dogs are given the collars that may help reduce the overall stress level within the shelter. They may be less vocal, hyper, etc. and may release fewer anxiety "chemicals" than if they don't have the collars. This may reduce the overall "emotional contagion" among the dogs in the shelter situation.

Kelly- you mention sprays or plugins for anxiety. Maybe these would be useful in a shelter situation as well. Don't know how they are used precisely, but having the spray released at night during the sleep hours might be an option???

I haven't seen them used in shelters. But then again most of the work I have done has been in municipal shelters that barely feed the dogs let alone acknowledge that the animals have feelings.

I agree that they could be incredibly beneficial in shelter environments.

That was very interesting. We use DAP here for the pups, the plug-in kind. I've really never considered using the collars, but I bet it would be good for Maui.

    Thanks for sharing Kelly!

Interesting! I've been wanting to see some actual studies on them, so thanks!

I used the DAP collar on my thunder-phobic Shiba girl, and it didn't seem enough to get her over her panic, but I also think it might have helped just a bit. I want to try one of the plug-ins to see if that is perhaps stronger. I'd like to get her away from meds, but I didn't find the DAP collar quite effective enough for her severe anxiety. However, it might be worth trying the plug in (or the collar again) as a way of at lessening the amount of sedatives she needs.

(We started with valium, but it made her hyperactive and aggressive and very very hungry--and pushy about it! So now we're going with acepromazine which will probably kind of knock her out, but she needs something to calm down)
