Dog beds.....what does every one think?

edited June 2010 in General
I have gone through quite a few dog beds and the other day, my wife comes home with two dog beds to replace the ones Sammi and Taro tore apart. Well now Taro is being a little devil and he has already tore through these two new beds.

What does every one recommend for a durable outdoor dog bed that wont break my wallet. I'm tired of cleaning torn bed foam and bed covers. I been thinking of sewing a couple of old towels together to make some beds but I think they need some thing softer.

Help please!!

Do they take to them right away? They look like something my dogs would like (given how much they LOVE being on furniture) but my dogs are always kind of suspicious of new beds, and some they just never adjust to. It's one of the things I've worried about with those beds.

how have they gone over for those of you that have them?

More related to the original question, when my dogs were young I simply couldn't keep a dog bed for them....they always tore them up. I gave up (the GSD had a thrift-store blanket to sleep on and the Shibas had my furniture!) until they got older and weren't so destructive. But that is obviously not a solution!)

And a further digression: my male Shiba is afraid of very little, but he has a deep abiding fear of sheepskin coats or anything that looks like that. who knows why. Anyway, earlier this year I decided to get a sheepskin for the GSD to sleep on....he was old, and arthritic and the Shibas always laid on his bed, and he needed his own place. So I got one. And Toby, my male Shiba, was TERRIFIED of it. I took it out of the box; he ran away and barked and barked. He wouldn't come into the living room. He'd approach stiff legged, and if anyone anywhere in the house moved, he ran, staring at the sheepskin suspiciously. I have to admit it was pretty funny, and the other dogs just settled down on it like, what the hell?

He's now used to it, but he does like to pounce on it occasionally and grab it and shake it while looking at me, like hey, see? I'm SO BRAVE!

eta: forgot to say one of my other "easy" beds was an old bed pillow with a a blanket wrapped around it (or once, when I got fancy, I sewed up a cover) This way, if they destroy it, I don't care, because it was so cheap to make. Of course, it only works for certain sized-dogs.

eta2: shoot, didn't see that originally you'd asked about OUTDOOR dog beds. Ok, my solutions were not good for that. Sorry!

You know with my dogs, it doesn't matter what bed they get. Hana sleeps in them with no issues but Taro would rather sleep on hard wood floor then on a bed. He has taken to the outdoor furniture lately and he likes to sleep on top of the outdoor table. Sammi likes to sleep on top of Hana......I dunno why but those two snuggle together every night.

I'm looking at either getting the individule beds from kuranda or getting the bunk beds. I think Taro might like sleeping on top since he likes to be up high.

Thanks for all the quick answers every one!

I don't give my dogs beds for that exact reason, Gen. I have a mountain of old towels that I keep handy, and I just chuck those in their crates and they sleep in there. It's actually kind of funny cause now that it's hotter they drag their towels out of their crates and sleep on the flooring.

ven just gets a cheap fleece blanket for just that reason although she has taken to sleeping right outside my sons bedroom door so i can fall over her if i get up in the night. her last proper dog bed lasted less than 5 minutes before it was shredded all over. when we had mars he always slept in his crate on vet bed. never had anything else and always seemed happy on it.

We use these beds in the shelters because they cannot be destroyed. My dogs love them. I think the only dog who didn't take to it right away was of course the dog I bought them for, Piglet. They are supposed to be great for animals with orthopedic pain and I bought her one after her knee surgery. But after I put her blanky on it she was cool. Miko and Ruby LOVE them. And my cats wait outside my dogs pens for me to let them in in the morning. Any time my dogs aren't in the beds you will find a fat old cat.

I have had my Kurandas for about 2 years and they are still going strong. Eventually I will order the cat tower to for my kitties. But those are pricey!

My pups have Kuranda beds, and they LOVE them!

However... They will only love them if they have some sort of cover on them... Bella has her favourite blanket that her grandmother made her, and Nola has one of the Kuranda covers on hers. Both are washable and make it just cozy enough for them to stay off my bed at night!!!! lol.

And Jessica is right, they literally can not be destroyed. Before the Kuranda beds, Nola destroyed EVERY SINGLE BED she had. In a matter of minutes. But the Kuranda bed is indestructible. The cover is pretty tough too.

Those kuranda beds look like the ones that I've seen people make out of pvc pipe.

Relatively recently we replaced all our dog beds with aluminum kuranda beds, it was a pretty expensive undertaking but I think its been worth it.

Jess recommended we cover them with something, and she was right, a few of our dogs wouldn't lay on them until we put a blanket or something on them. We ordered the bedding/covers they sell that attach to the beds and so far the dogs LOVE those.

We also have the bunk bed, its works ok - the Kai really like it.

Ahi will even sleep on these beds, that is a big deal, she NEVER sleeps on dogs beds (she prefers the ground).

So have the dogs figured out that there is elastic holding the covers on yet?

That is the only thing that bothered me about the covers... Nola chewed through the elastic bands pretty quickly... However, I fixed her fascination with it by zip tying the covers to the bed. :)

Both Maymay and Koda hated the Kurandas. I even got the covers for them. I ended up donating them to the no-kill shelter down the street from me.

Now I have Snoozzy's for both of the dogs. Maymay tore through the thick ones with padding, but she hasn't touched her Snoozzy for some reason.

    Here's a pic.

  • i was wondering if anyone knew if these two items im listing below are any good.
i sleep on a tempurpedic and i love it so perhaps the dogs would enjoy sleeping on one as well?
not sure which is more suitable between the deep dish and the dream lounger version.

    http://www.tempurpedic.com/searchResults.aspx

this ruffwear item also looks like it good be good for camping, he can sleep on it inside the tent.

    http://www.ruffwear.com/Highlands-Bed?sc=2&category=17

anyways, if anyone has experience with any of these items, please chime in!
  • Ghost will love the Tempurpedic and it will provide excellent support. We have a Temp mattress too and the dogs love it. I would go with the dream lounger and top it off with this:

  • My big dog destroyed a lot of the nice fluffy beds I bought too. I ended up just putting down stall mats from the feed store and threw in some old comforters for outside. For the Shibas I have a Perrla bed for outside. I bought a Kuranda and the Shibas won't go on it unless it is covered in blankets or with a bolster bed on it.

Sukoshi has claimed the large pillow bed. Cover is washable, but I put an additional throw blanket on it anyway. Hoshi does well in cheap "donut" beds (<$10.00 per bed). I stack two on top of each other to give him more padding and cover w/ throw blanket. He's happy curled up in them. (And of course, they have claimed part of my bed as theirs--typical Shibas!)

The dog houses, if we use them, get filled with blankets or comforters that I find on sale. One solution to the outside dog bed problem might be to build plywood platforms and cover them w/ area rugs that can be washed or removed with ease. You can always do multiple layers of rugs. (Or you might want to get rug remnants from carpet stores.)

  • The favorite bed in our house (beyond my bed and the sofa I mean) WAS a nice sheepskin throw. I say was, because Oskar decided it was a toy and chewed on it. I salvaged most of it, but it is definitely only Shiba sized now. Otherwise they lay on polar fleece throws or comforters I buy from the thrift shop. Toby has a chair in his room that he likes that is covered with a blanket or sheet depending on the weather, and when he's in the rest of the house, he prefers the sofa or he likes to curl up in the crate.
  • ill probably go with the tempurpedics for the dogs and hopefully they dont tear it up!

i never let the dogs use the human furniture so id like to get them something nice to use.
those outdoor kuranda beds are nice as well.
  • I'm just gonna make some out of old pillows/foam stuff and some fake fur I've got lying around. I used to make costumes and I have a TON of fur... I could make several full-size blankets out of it all and will probably make at least one and the rest into dog beds.

But dang, tempurpedic DOG beds? Heck, I'd buy one for myself and just let the dog sleep on the bed with me! I also really like those kuranda beds. I wonder if I can make one of those as well...
  • Well, Sosuke likes strips of fleece cut up in his crate, which he digs around in. Doesn't really matter if he were to rip them, but he doesn't. Rakka prefers the floor or the couch. I also have an old blanket I just fold up into a dog-sized rectangle and put on the floor. My dogs don't really chew their beds, though.

@Losech - You can definitely make a kuranda-type bed out of pvc pipes. Or wood, whatever you like to work with.
  • Losech, you had the same thought about the tempurpedic dog beds as I did! I saw the price, choked, then started thinking about how very large dogs are actually bigger than I am . . .
  • can some of you adult shikoku owners chime in and let me know if the large dimensions are a good size for a full grown shika. i figure it would be better if he had extra space instead of being an exact fit.
    Large rectangle 43" x 29"

the smaller size would be Medium rectangle 36" x 24" and there is also X-large rectangle 53" x 35.
    these are all outside dimensions.
  • The 43" x 29" would be a great fit.
  • edited October 2011
I agree that 43 x 29 would be fine. I tend to by the large size beds, but not the extra large.

My two are very good with stuffed dog beds and don't chew them. They actually both like dog beds a lot, and choose them more often over the floor. I don't allow them on the furniture.

They seem to really like the donut beds, more so that the ones without a bolster.

And just because it is cute, Kuma and Sachi when she was a pup. Still have this bed 2 years later and still looks good

  • That first picture is adorable! That bed is pretty neat too.
  • ya, it looks so comfy!
  • I don't think you need a dog bed at all... guess that should be the best solution in all ways ;)
  • Ghost's new bed arrived today. i went with the large Orvis Tempur-Pedic deep dish dog bed. its huge but it also lets him have side bolsters and the ability to completely sprawl out sideways. it seems to be quite a bit harder than my tempur-pedic mattress but perhaps it will soften a little over time. my fiance tried to steal it one of the pics hehe.
