How did you name your pets?
I'm curious to know how you all came up with your pets' names. I'll go first.
Tojo is named after Hideki Tojo. I guess it's sort of like naming your dog Adolf or Lucifer, but I just liked the name. If he was a girl (we told the breeder we didn't have a preference), we were going to call him Yoshimi after the Flaming Lips song "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots".
Loki had that name at the shelter. Actually, my parents adopted him while I lived at home, so it wasn't just my decision. My sister and I decided we were going to rename him but we couldn't think of anything better, so it stayed as Loki and I think it suits him.
Rakka is named after a character from the anime mini-series Haibane Renmei. In the series, the character Rakka is born from a cocoon and remembers living somewhere else and having a different family, so I thought it suited her since we adopted her as an adult. She came from somewhere else and sort of started a new life with us. At first we were going to call her Samus because we've always wanted a dog named Samus, but it didn't really suit her.
Hester's full name is actually Hester Jiskoot. She's named after a university professor that Noah and I had both had. Don't ask why, I don't remember.
Ridley is named after one of the bosses from the Metroid video game series. Actually, we didn't think we were keeping him when we named him. We were taming four seperate litters of feral kittens (when we first moved here there was a huge feral cat colony) and we pretty much just named them whatever since we weren't planning on keeping them. Ridley's litter was the "Nintendo" litter, so there was Princess Peach and Princess Daisy (from Mario) and then Ridley and Motherbrain (from Metroid). I'm just glad we decided to keep Ridley and not Motherbrain, lol!

Dahmer was named after Jeffrey Dahmer, the serial killer.
Kayden was a name I randomly made up cause I liked the sound of it.
Sassy's full name is Sarsaparilla. She's feminine and princess-ish so I wanted to give her a girly girl name. We were naming off flowers, trees and plants and Sarsaparilla stuck. She is sassy so it works out.
Lilith was named because Errik likes the name. Chubbs just looked/looks like a Chubbs with his puffed out cheeks.
Lumi is pure black and I couldn't think of anything to name her. She was the motherly sort so I wanted to give her a humble name. Her name means "snow" in Finnish. Opposite of what she looks like. (Her name was Licorice at the shelter)
The rats came with the name and I kept them because I already associated each rat with their names.
My shiba's name will be Ryu meaning "Dragon" in Japanese. Errik's favorite creature is dragons, he prefers European dragons to Asian ones but he's not that picky. He wants to name his wolf Tiamat, his second favorite dragon. His first is Fafnir.
Haven't thought of names for anyone else yet :P
+1 Heidi! Ryu is a hottie!
John named Portia because she is a Boxer and kind of sounds like Boxter, which is made by Porche, therefor she became our little Portia Boxer. Yes, john is a car freak...At least we spelled it different! But now all the vets we go to pronounce it POR-TEE-A...LOL. It's like, HELLO? Haven't you heard of PORTIA DE ROSSI?! Ellen DeGeneres? hehe jk.
Now for Ninja. We got him and you all know his shyness. So we were thinking about names...and we noticed we were always like "WHERE IS HE!?" "WHERE DID HE GO?" and he would always be right next to us or behind us. We have 3 flights of stairs in our home and so when we would walk down to go to the front door, I could always hear Portia but when I would get down to the front door, I would look behind me and no sight of Ninja. But of course he was right down there next to me. And then John was like "Man, he's so quiet and fast, like a Ninja" and we both looked at eachother and yelled "NINJA!"
And for a future dogs, I really can't make up a name until I see the dog and get to know it's personality. So we'll see what else we come up with. LOL, I can't wait to have kids..."hmm...you're kind of just a blob right now, so I'll give you a name when you have more personality!" lol
We named our dogs after Hawaiian places or words. I am a surfer - spent a lot of time in Hawaii - we got Maui first, then Kaia, then Ahi... when we got Ahi we where not sure if we wanted to keep the Hawaiian theme going... but we decided we might as well. So, six dogs later, we have a bunch of random Hawaiian words and places as names for our dogs.
Maui looks like a little blond surfer... so that is why we named him Maui.
Oh, and no, I am not Hawaiian.
Taj is named after the BMX rider Taj Mihelich(sp? honestly I'm not sure if that's how you spell it, my ex named her). He had her name picked out before we picked her up from the breeder.
I found the name Kohji in either "The Total Shiba" or the "Japanese Dogs" book, and love that name for him. It took me a long time to name him; he was like 14 weeks still running around with me calling him pup or puppy. I almost named him Soda, but I knew a lady who had a Border Collie with that name already.
News came with his name. I was going to change his name to Impulse when I got him, but it never sounded right, and News worked out just fine.
Drew named Shinobi after the Sega Video game...and it's funny cuz Shinobi actually is kinda sneaky, even though Drew thought of the name long before he got him.
We named Kiba after the main character in a Japanese Anime, Wolf's Rain. The main character is a white wolf, and from the first pic we got of him, we thought he looked like a baby one. Plus, we wanted the names (Shinobi and Kiba) to sound good together, so we stuck with the japanese theme.
OK....
We had a list of names when we knew we were getting a shiba but decided on Niko because it means Cat like and above the law and it fit with the breed. Not very feminine and everyone thinks she is a boy (she is kinda masculine). I had someone at a vets office look at me funny cause of her name. She told me "you know that means cat right?" er der
Sasha to me is a dogs name and I always wanted a sasha but would not name one of my Japanese dogs that. Chad and I met Sasha and he was debating getting her and I told him that I wanted to name her sasha and he said that is what he was wanting to name her. I told him it was a sign (that is me being manipulative). Sasha's name was violet because she came to the foster home with a purple collar and her sisters name was green.
Our cats name is Kitty, I have not always been very bright or original.
When we adopted her her name was Rachel. There is no way there could be more than one. She is just so prissy that we could never think of a name. My roomies wanted to name her fireball cause she caught on fire the first night we had her by sticking her tail in a candle. We also had a cat named sequel...now I thought that was original....part 2!
We have a HUGE list for our akita. Chad just went through and highlighted his favs. I have a few ideas but not going to get attached to anything until he is born which is now a wait until this fall, but well worth it.
Shan - I love Wolf's Rain! I didn't know Kiba was after Kiba from Wolf's Rain. *thumbs up*
Heidi - i really like it too!! Drew wanted to watch it before we got Kiba...so when we were thinking of names, he suggested we watch it to see if we'd want to name him that...and after the first episode, i was set on it!
...I love that we can share similar interests on this forum other than just our doggies!!
Hello everyone!
We are new to this forum - but I thought I'd reply to this post to introduce our Shiba "Ryu". He's 4 months old and has completely taken over our hearts. We live in Hawaii currently (my husband is in the Army) and we just brought our Ryu home the day after Thanksgiving. And every day since has been a huge learning experience! Just today, he shredded his THIRD collar/harness so we will be needing to find a better alternative
Anyway, we came up with the name Ryu after searching for Japanese names online. I'm Korean, my husband is Filipino, we live in Hawaii, so we thought we'd at least let him keep something Japanese At first, we named him Kenji and then we brought him home. Kenji means "strong and vigorous" and when he took 3 naps in 5 hours, we decided it wasn't a good fit So we settled upon Ryu and it just rolled off our tongues really nicely... however, everyone else seems to mispronounce it as "Roo" so that's a bit of a bummer.
I just wanted to say that this forum has been a lifesaver. We don't have any Shiba meetups or local forums so you have helped us immensely with understanding the breed. The passion that you all feel is so evident in your posts!
I'll post some pictures of Ryu another time when I can figure that part out
until next time,
Pam
Welcome! Cant wait to hear more stories and see pics.
How do you pronounce the name correctly and what does it mean?
Welcome! I know we have another person who joined us recently who is also in Hawaii. It's funny Ryu's original name was Kenji. That is my brother-in-laws name. And he lives in Hawaii.
Hope this forum is as helpful to you as it has been for me.
Hi Pam & Ryu, welcome to the forum! I'm glad you have found the forum helpful, can't wait to see some pics of Ryu!
~Brad
Welcome to the pack!
Welcome to the forum Pam and Ryu! I can't wait to see some pics of your shiba! Im glad you found us and im sure you'll learn soooo much on here as i am.
Wow! Thanks for the welcome guys!
Now for some bad news - Rina, I'm really going to make you hate us We don't pronounce Ryu the way it is SUPPOSED to be pronounced. We're from the South so we have a long history of butchering words (hehe). Basically we pronounce things the first way they roll off our tongue. Ryu's name is pronounced like this: Rye (like the bread) + You, so it's Rye-You. Sorry Rina
But if it makes you feel any better, our puppy class trainer pronounces it the Japanese way! Ryu had his first puppy socialization class experience last night. I could have sworn I read somewhere that Shibas don't really bark that much....... yea, not this guy All in all, it was a great experience and we got the usual "What kind of dog is that?!" and "Wow, he looks like a fox" and then the always priceless "Are those teeth marks on your hands?" Maybe that last one isn't all that common for you guys.... but boy, does Ryu love to bite!!! I've heard that it's a puppy thing and that he'll grow out of it but do any of you have any suggestions on taming that situation?? hehe - I'd like to look somewhat normal from the wrist down again...
I promised pictures so here are some for now (sorry the files are so large):
And one of the big guy himself:
These were taken when he was much younger (around 2 1/2 months) but I'll get some newer ones up soon
Well, I feel tongue licks on my leg so I better tend to the "all-important" now
OMG Pam!!! Your boy is SOOOOO CUTE!!! Awww...I love him! Post more post more! LOL.
BTW, the first photo is a great family photo, all of you matching in red and look so happy! You should definately Frame that one!
As for his name...so his name is pronounced Rye but you spell it Ryu, so you guys got creative and spelled it with a twist. People do it all the time with kids, why not with pets!? So technically, you should be correcting people and saying "ahem, its not Ryu, its Rye" lol.
He is precious.
As far as the biting thing. Most dogs respond if you exclaim "ow" (even if it doesn't hurt). Puppy teeth are sharp though so it probably does hurt.
Our dogs names are Sora, Stokes, Tag, and Jack. Sora, we came up with while searching for a Japanese name for our shikoku. I named off most of my cousins in Japan and we really didn't like them. Most don't sound like dog names. Jen wanted a short name that ended in an a sound b/c she thought it sounded good. So, we narrowed the search down online and came across Sora, which means sky. Her full name is Hoshimi no Sora, which means roughly, shining star in the sky. We liked sky b/c we're both in the Air Force. Tag and Jack are our border collies. Typically, border collies have one syllable names for working in the field. So, Jen liked Tag and Jack. They seem to fit the dogs pretty well. Stokes is our rescue dog. he's half chow, half shiba. I did my Master's thesis on creating an analytical model that incorporated chaos theory and non-linear differential equations in the Navier-Stokes Equation. I got Stokes as a present to myself after finishing. So, Stokes is a much better name than Navier for a dog. Sorry, I went way overboard on the geekiness.
