  • @Sangmort - maybe you'll want to try a Jindo? :-)
  • @ayk - You never know! :D Jindo are very intriguing! Or maybe a laika. I've always loved seeing & hearing about Sarah's. :)

But, I think I'll be sticking with the Dutchies for a long time. ;) They're like, my "soul breed" haha They're a LOT like Dragoon, [ kishu ] but with less independence, & of course, brindle! :) ~
  • I would love a silver brindle Akita. Love them!

@sangmort - Jindos come in brindle, too. I have one being grown out right now. :-) She's in an obedience home and the feedback is that she's going to be very good at it. Obedient but not soft.

  • It's funny how different we are in what we want (good, but funny!) because I read Sangmort's post about loving the Dutchies because they are less independent and I thought aack! nightmare! *lol* When my friend was trying to fit in the GSD to her household, I was almost tempted, he was so pretty, but then I watched him follow her from room to room, the way he was always watching to see what she wanted him to do, and I remembered how much that drives me nuts!

I can deal, better, with the annoyance of the dogs totally ignoring me and not doing what I want when I want them to do something, better than I can deal with a dog that wants to be given tasks and is really attentive. Perhaps I was a cat person in another life! *lol*
  • @ayk - WOW! She's gorgeous!!! I had no idea they came in brindle. Yes, softness is what bothers me with most of the NK. I like more bull-headedness lol For example, I can not raise my voice at all, even the slightest, with Fate, lest he start shaking / shutting down. With the Dutchies & Dragoon, they just glance at me "Huh? What? Ok, fine."

@shibamistress - ALL my dogs follow me from room to room. They're all nosey lol Even Dragoon, who is ridiculously independent does it.

Even if they're all exhausted, and laying down, the second I stand up, they ALL get up & follow me. I don't think Dutchies are quite as velcro as GSD's, but I think it depends...Wraith & Aggro have the same sire, but they're both vastly different. Wraith is always off doing something, & "checks in" with us for some love. 1 minute, then he's off again. Aggro, is much the same, but his 'check ins" last longer lol Like 15 minutes.

& Even tho Dragoon/kishu is by far the most independent, she has the best obedience, with Aggro 2nd. She's VERY sharp, she learns VERY quickly, and does NOT forget. Aggro is the same, but it takes him a couple minutes longer. [ so if it takes Dragoon 2 minutes, it takes Aggro 5, Wraith would be like, 45 lol ]

Wraith takes a long time to learn, but once he's got it, he's got it. & Fate...well, Fate is "special." ;)

So, all that to say, I don't think Obedience correlates with independence. lol But then again, I have trouble defining the independence too...I think a shiba would drive me insane [ too extreme independence ] but I think the Dobe's with their infamous velcro-ness would drive me nuts too lol I like something in between, which is what I have, for the most part haha ~
  • Osy, that sounds like Tojo, with the cool-headedness. If you yelled at him, he'd just look at you like, "Bitch, please..." He knew the rules and he knew when you were wrong, too. Like if he was holding something and I thought it was something he wasn't supposed to have, so I said 'drop it', but it was actually one of his toys or chews, he'd just turn and stare at me until I realized I was wrong, then he'd be like, "Yeah... that's right. You were wrong." If I did that to Sosuke or Rakka they'd drop it start "apologizing."

@hondru - Heidi, yes, exactly! LOL I've so been there with they "HEY!!! DROP THAT!!!" & they turn like, "Um...no, you said before this is MINE." hahaha

Dragoon is half & half. Sometimes she's like, "Pffft. Whatever" & sometimes she's "OMG! I am SO sorry." lol ~
  • True, I don't think obedience correlates with independence either but I was blurring that a bit. None of our dogs follow us at all! Leo is the most likely to follow, but he's learned from the other dogs not to really do it. The others are like, yeah, whatever, I'm just chilling out here!

I don't mind the check ins at all....it's just the need to be always glued to you like some GSDs or pitties can be that drives me crazy.

The dutchies are gorgeous, though, that's for sure, and I'm glad I know someone that has them, so I can to hear about them, anyway! (And I love your dogs names too!)
  • @shibamistress - Lisa, it's funny huh, how different & simillar they can all be. ;)

None of my dogs are glued to me, that would suck! LOL But they all follow me around. It's funnier when they reach the "off limit" areas, for example, the kitchen. There's no dog gate or anything there, but we've taught them all not to go in the kitchen. [ couldn't control the counter surfing, plus, fur in my cooking!!! ] so when I get up to go to the kitchen, they ALL park outside the threshold, so you'll see 4 pups sitting, standing, & laying down there waiting for me. When I come out, they're all like "OHHHH!!! What do you have?!" even if I have nothing!

Then they follow me back to the couch. "What? Nothing for me?"

then after a minute, they all go back to their business...UNLESS one of us gets up again. haha NOSEY! ~
  • @Shibamistress, my Akita's follow me everywhere lol They aren't "Velcro dogs" like Dobe's but they know where I am at all times and if I leave the room they are right behind/beside me. Now my Schnauzer/Yorkie mix is alllll over me allll the time LOL She IS a Velcro dog!!
