Akita recall

edited August 2010 in Behavior & Training
Now I have a bit of an issue of getting my 15 week old Akita to come when he is called I just can't get him excited and he is not food responsive.
He will come some times but its a slow wonder over not an instant recall by any means.
This is the only thing we are struggling with he can sit, stay and lay down on command and nearly walk on a loose leash but getting him to come when called is driving me nuts.
When he does come I give loads of praise and a treat but even when being praised he looses interest and just wonders off he is just so independent.
Even training him when he's hungry gives little to none improvement.
Does any body have any suggestions your help is very much appreciated.

  • Try running away when you call him to engage his drive to chase. You might find that helpful.

Otherwise, from the sound of it, he may just not be great at recall. Ever. He is an Akita after all. :-)
  • He is also only 15 weeks. It is kind of like being frustrated with a six month old child for not being potty trained. Right now you are laying the foundation. When he does come reinforce it with lots of praise. And when he doesn't relax and try again. Remember he is only a puppy.
  • Does he love toys maybe he's more toy motivated? He's still young so he might get better as he grows.

I don't own an akita so I'm not sure if they are like shiba inu in the come aspect..
  • I misread the title as "Akitas....being recalled!" *lol*

good advice from people....just keep working with him, and know that he's not only just a puppy, but he's an Akita puppy and may not have a good recall....many of them don't. It's one of the things that makes them "not for everyone" as we have discussed in the other thread.

  • Well I've really started to get results and all it took was using his food bowl at meal times.
I would get my wife to hold him near the front door and call him from the other end of the yard at meal time and he would run to me when i called his name. Now when i walk back to the feeding spot with him i use the heal command and he walks right beside me.
This morning was the first time i got the correct result without the bowl he was coming when called and stuck right by my side when walking i even opened the gate and walked him around the front of the house without a lead.
    I'm very proud of him.
I love the akita breed they are stubborn but still highly trainable (actually that's what my wife says about me)
  • Yay! That's great! The power of positive training!
