Gray striped Kais

edited October 2010 in Kai Ken (甲斐犬)
Maymay, Koda and I were taking a little afternoon nap before the Giants game on the couch and I realized that both of them are changing colors a bit. Koda is getting more golden blond stripes, but Maymay is getting more white/gray stripes. I went on Google to try and pull pictures of gray striped kais or kais with anything other than Koda's coloring and unfortunately the only dogs that show up are American kais. This did not help my mission at all. One of Royal Kennels dogs kind've looked like it had Maymay's coloring stripes, but hers are so not well formed. They are thick more like a Chu-Tora or even a Cream can be but she is mostly black. Not sure if this makes sense.

Has anyone ever seen kais that don't have the brown/golden blond stripes? I have only seen them in cartoon depictions.

  • Yes there are some with lighter brown, and grey brindle. It's seen as a dilution of color, so breeders breed away from it.
  • I have no doubt in my mind that Maymay was not bred in a program that was trying to "better" the breed or hold to breed show standards by any means. Maymay has some faults that are apparent. Her coloring just intrigues me, and she's changing color. But then again so is Koda right now. Maybe it's a seasonal thing.

I do think her personality is more "type" than some Kais here. It makes her a challenge, and it's so worth it. I would love to import a male and see how he would differ personality wise from Koda. Maymay reminds me a lot of the first Kai I met, Akiko. They are spot on the same personality. I love having her around.
