Duck hunt with the boy

edited December 2010 in Hunting & Working
Went out on a short duck hunt yesterday with my Son and even with the squirly kid tucked away in my mummy blind with Hana, I managed to down a Cinnamon teal and a wigeon, missed a crap load of birds but we had a blast for being out there foronly about 2 hours.

Hana is becoming a amazing retriever with making 100% retrieves on winged and wounded birds. She will dive down all the way down to where there is only the tip of her tail sticking out of the water to get a diving duck. Best duck dog I have ever had.

  • LoL, look at that smile on his face. That's when you know he had a fun time:)
  • Oh my gosh your son is so handsome. What a cutie pie! This pic is priceless. He looks like he strangled those ducks to death.
  • Ahh your son is so cute! I don't think I've ever seen a pic of him. How old is he? Congrats on the birds.
  • He's gonna be a heartbreaker!
  • Thanks every one. My Son just turned 3 and he is a briliant little kid. He's been going to a Japanese school since Janurary of this year and he speaks almost perfect Japanese for a kid his age. And yes he loves to hunt and fish. His favorite show is nagareboshi gin (he watches it literally every day) and Koyuki is "his" hunting dog.

I almost got him a little .22 for Christmas but Mom said "over my dead body" soooo maybe next year.
  • There's a Japanese school for 3 year olds? The earliest I've found is 5 :(

You're more than welcome to get my 23 month old a .22 but I think Mommy would want to use it more :P
  • There's a Japanese pre school here in San Diego and its from ages 2 to 5. Its more like day care but its set up like a Japanese pre school so he gets to learn instead of just spedning the day with a bunch of kids. They hve lots of activities and events on the weekends tht allows the parents to be inlcuded.

Next month I get to teach the kids about the local wild animals and take animal skins, antlers, skulls, stuffed animals, and bird feathers.
I recently went there in uniform and a Police car with my K9 handler buddy. The kids had a blast waching the Malenois work. He's there Mon-fri 7am to about 4pm so he gets to do a lot of learning and its a really friendly place.

  • We should've moved to San Diego :( Sounds awesome.
  • So firstly, sorry the wife nixed the .22 for Christmas. Next year, for sure. I like those little Crickett rifles b/c they're single shot.
Secondly, I love your son's shirt.
Thirdly, there are very few things in the world that make me want to have children. That photo is one of those things. Glad you got to shoot some birds and it sounds like Hana's really making a super good dog.
Do you find waterfowling to be ridiculously expensive to get into? I'd have to get a new gun chambered for 3 1/2" shells, calls, decoys, a dog or a boat, a blind, new camo, non-toxic shot, and that's just to start! I would love to give it a try, but it's almost unapproachably expensive.
  • Kevin: it can be as expensive as you want it. I started duck hunting by hunting with mentors but when I started on my own I purchased 12 "hot-buy" discount decoys, waders, and my old winchester 1300 chambered for 3 inch rounds. Now I have about a 100 duck decoys, 60 or so goose decoys, 4 mojo spinning wing dekes, a camo boat (got it as a regular arluminum V hull oh and for free), layout blinds, duck hunting clothing and waders by Drake water fowl systems, a benelli shotgun with 3 1/2 in chamber, duck and goose calls galor, and I shoot federal black cloud ammo (cheap and most effective without buying expensive ammo).

Lot of the equipment I have I purchased on sale, used, or given by people I know. I usually spend about $300 or so a year now on duck equipment like ammo and more decoys. Start out simple and slowly build up your gear, it took my 16 years to build up my trash pile. Once you get into duck hunting though, its addicting. I'm amazed at watching a flock of green heads make a hard bank turn to your spread after giving a few high ball calls. Or watching a dozen teal do zig-zags in mid air nearly colliding into each other to land in the open spot you made in your pread of decoys.

My wife always reminds me that my hobbies are the number one expense... I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to tell her that I have to buy new rotar housings for my RX-7 race car and the machining costs for the new WRX motor going into my daily driver.
  • Ok, educating Rina time..why do you need so many decoys? Can you not just reuse the ones you have?
  • Rina: by the way you should move to San Diego!

One of the reason to set out so many decoy is to creat a super flock of resting/feeding birds. Lot of times in wide open areas this will attract ducks flying really high. It shows the ducks that food is abundant in the area. But it doesn't always work like that. I have hd days where 6 decoys worked better then 2 dozen.

There is also a art form in decoy placement. You can just throw decoys out all over the place. You have to break them up here and there to creat a landing zone. Now some of my decoys are old and I dont use them much any more. Every year around september me and sme of my duck hunting buddies will hae a decoy painting party (lots of decoy paint, beer, steaks, and photos of different ducks).

With the late seasn I usually use about 2 dozen decoys (wigeon, teal, pintail, shouvlers, and a few mallard) and about a dozen and a half of goose decoys.
  • Gen I can get you Geese, no problem. Koda chased about 200 off the baseball field tonight.
  • My god, he is so cute! Love that pic!

So I guess Hana didn't feast on those ducks!
  • Haha by the time we get around moving to san diego you would be up here so ill still be sol.

Ah thanks for the decoy lesson. Sounds complicated.

  • Thank God I caught Hana before she started to eat the ducks! She tried but failed, I had to keep the ducks next to me all day in my blind.

Soon, very soon I will move the village up north. Just waiting to see if I can get a job with a agencie up that way.
  • Gen where are you looking to move up here? I used to work for Police Departments in the Development Dept. and with PAL.
  • We're looking in the area around Sonoma, Monterey, San Benito, some where near the coast but has a decent piece of property in rural area.
  • edited December 2010
Sonoma would be the easiest for me to get to...just saying :P

The suckiest thing is...we're kind of thinking of moving back to OC when it comes time to buy a house haha. (2-3 years)
  • Well its probably going to take me that long to get out of SD, its still up in the air. Trying to figure out to see if it better to stay where I'm at for now and wait out the economy to get better to move to another department or just make the move and risk the possibility of being pink slipped at a new agency.
  • Lol same reason why it's still a "thinking" thing for us. Errik's going back to school and switching careers but he's also scared of starting fresh somewhere just to get laid off.
  • Your son is so handsome! He looks so proud in that pic! :)
  • Thank you very much. I took him hunting with me today and he cried all the way home because he wanted me to try a "new area". I have no idea where this new area is but we'll look for it on thursday.
  • Gen, what are you going to do with your job? You making a lateral transfer?
  • Just don't transfer to Vallejo or Oakland lol
  • Gen, where do you usually go hunting at?
  • Yeah Tara I will avoid those places like the plague!

I usually hunt locally in the SD mountains or areas in central/norcal. Soon I maybe going over to Dave's for a turkey hunt!
  • I didn't know you're a police officer Shishiinu. I'm actually in the same field as you. I'm trying to get hire by a department here in Minnesota. I love the Belgian Malinois too. They were my favorite breed before the Kishu came along.

Maybe I should move down there and attend your son's day care huh?? LOL.. I really want to learn Japanese...but I'm not a book learner I need to learn by speaking it.
  • @yiasthoj My neighbor has a few Malinois. He has a small breeding program, 5 dogs. The newest import came yesterday. She's adorable! The Malinois like coming to my house where I spoil them. Good dogs. A bit too sharp for my taste.
