  • Interesting....they did mention some of the things I thought too, which is that I think it would be a cool sport, but I don't like the idea that many Schutzhund trainers are not using positive methods....

I also liked the point that they made about how well trained a dog is, esp. if it is trained to protection sport as a game, that the dog will listen to the commands even when very excited by the game. (that sentence is very oddly structured, but I'm leaving it!)
  • Great discussion!

In protection sports...it's all about control, control, control! It's more obedience (and even agility/speediness) then anything else. It can get very frustrating at times, especially with such a high or low driven dog but you really need to be patient. I learned the hard way...but if you start getting upset with the dog...and can't think clearly yourself that you get angry with the dog. It's probably best to end the session & try again when you, as the handler/trainer, are in a better frame of mind.

It's all about control, working as a team & having fun! If you or your dog aren't having fun...then it's pointless. This can be said for any sport or activity.
