So when we were at training last night at petsmart, I was looking at the leashes and collars, I saw the Gentle Leader...But what size should I get?  It just said Petite, Small, Medium, Large.  So if any of you guys have one that you use for your shiba, what size did you get?  I think Ninja is around 20 lbs now.

Ninja is HUGE and not done growing!!!!!!!!!!

Chad you were screwed when you put a deposit on a shiba!

LOL, I knew it...I am going to have the world's smallest boxer and the worlds largest Shiba!  Hahaha, actually, I think that 60 lb. Shiba is the biggest.  20 lbs @ 6 months, is that heavy?  Well im not sure if that his exact weight, but a few weeks ago he was 18 lbs.  And he has been averaging 1 lb per week.  But we'll find out on friday when he gets his balls chopped off Sealed

Well for comparison, my Shikoku is 5 months old (and 1 week) and 25 lbs. So I would say that Ninja is a pretty large Shiba (but too cute!)

Romi, how big is your boxer?
  • edited November -1
Ninja would probably need a S/M at this time.  Open one up the store and try it on him.

Barbara - My boxer is 35 lbs @ 16 months.

Small breeds, like the Shiba, grow very fast at first then slow down so, Ninja is probably slowing down now that he is around 6 months - but Maui and Kaia both kept growing, very slowly, till around 12 months to 16 months.

A male Shiba can be up to 24 1/4 pounds (the preferred weight of a male Shiba is 23lb) and still be considered within the breed standard - So Ninja may not go to far past the standard, I would not worry to much. Also, keep in mind that most of the Shibas on this forum are rather small.

Wow, Portia is a teeny boxer. That's a minimum of 20lbs under standard! I was looking through the gallery and Portia just doesn't seem that small.

I like my two dogs to walk in front of me on a loose leash. This way I can keep track of them. I will use the Easy Walk harness if my younger dog gets excited and starts to pull.

I don't allow my dogs to walk in front of me. They are to walk at my side; slightly behind is okay, but no lagging. Since Kei is still a pup, he is learning so I'm a bit more relaxed with him, he is kind all over the place at times, lol. Lynx knows better, so I have to "pop" her every now and then as a little reminder of who is leading on the walk - and that is always me. Occasionally, I will allow them ahead of me, especially for climbs up or down hills...but it is not for very long.

    -----------

Note: I have them on loose lead. Lynx has transfered from the pinch (she's a major puller) to the fur saver now. And Kei is still on the harness for walks; it's easier to control him. Also because the collar is too easy for him to slip out from.

Having my dogs in front of me on a loose lead came from walking 2 Malamutes at the same time. I didn't want to have them knock me off my feet if they saw something interesting. So if I had them in front of me I could read their body language and be forewarned!

Note: Chad is REALLY losing!  He is out of town right now but we will have more Niko and daddy stories next week.
  • edited November -1
Rachael, you should start a thread for the Niko vs. Chad stories. That way we'll have a coherent history.
  • edited November -1
Very good idea.  The humor that I live everyday to share with all!  BTW Niko may not still be alive by the time Chad gets home.  Just went up front and she is shredding the carpet!!!!!!!!!!  It was not well installed but that is NOT like her at all!!!!!
  • edited November -1
I got a better idea, a thread of how many times Chad outsmarts Rachael.

LOL, I think we should make a thread for everyone here, MEN VS WOMEN.  GIRL POWER!!!!

Like one of the ladies will ask a question to a specific man on this forum and that a man has to answer and vice versa....see who gets the most points!  But, there will have to be a strict rule of trust, all must refrain from googling trying to find the answer.

I think the men are outnumbered tho!
  • edited November -1
I'm purposely staying as far away from this as possible. I'm calling it now: no good can come of this!
  • edited November -1

    Bunny seems to prefer men

    Piglet prefers men

    Moto prefers men

    and they all love me

On a dog forum does that make me a guy?

  • edited November -1

Hm....does that mean you MEN are afraid of us LADIES?!  Is that a forfeit??? Tongue out

Jessica-  LOL...im not sure how to respond.

  • edited November -1

Nope, it just means we're too smart to fall into that kinda trap. We're out numbered by like 198-7. In order for it to be a forfeit we would have had to agree to participate to begin with and then decided against it. So I'd say its just a smart decision. Tongue outTongue outTongue outTongue outTongue out

Jessica: I don't know if it makes you a guy, but it certainly makes you one bad ass chick. Wink

Jess...im NOT losing you to the other team!

Nice try Rachael, but I'm not taking the bait.
  • edited November -1

Dave, it's good to know you have strong survival instincts....LOL.

Chad...beware. Rachael may give you points to keep face, but one day, you might cross the line and then BAM!!! No more DaddyofNiko...hehe.

Jess, it means you're a wonderful dog Mommy!!!
