Taste of the Wild?

edited March 2011 in General
Reading Sangmort's Awesome article, "New Dog Owners: Dog Food 101" (strongly suggest new dog owners read that thread in its entirety), has spurred our research *cough obsession cough*.
Still a year... or more (hope not) from getting our puppy and here we are putting together a list potential foods... sigh
We came across a great review of "Taste of the Wild: High Prairie" and are curious if anyone is using this food or has an opinion regarding it. The ingrediants list is enticing and grain free. http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/products/dogs/dry_food/high_prairie_canine_formula/

@Calia Thank you for the suggestion of re-posting our question.

  • Quite a few ppl do feed Taste of the Wild. Taste of the Wild is less expensive than the other Grain Free formulas out there. I personally have never fed it, but know people in the shiba meetup group I'm a part of that do feed it and their dogs are still full of energy and look great.

You can always check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com

  • @Jujee Thank you for the link and your response. We did find that source also. While it is very well written and informative, regarding the nutritional values of the different dog foods and their ingrediants, we found it curious that each of the foods we researched had only one review on such a comprehensive site. That is why we decided to pose this question, in an attempt to benefit from the first hand experience of others. :)

We are looking at puppy and adult formula foods that are "high quality" and available to us locally. They are: Orijen, Wellness, Merrick, Solid Gold, and Taste of the Wild. Interestingly enough, it is the small, idependently operated pet stores that carry these products and not the larger chainstores.

  • Yeah, the small stores like to carry foods that are not available to them at their local grocery store or petco/petsmart.

The store I go to for chews and treats for Mika are getting rid of all their Merrick food and have a 25% off on all Merrick items because they will no longer be carrying it. Either petco or petsmart (think it's petco but not 100% sure I rarely go to those stores) started carrying Merrick, so they decided to carry Timberwolf in place of Merrick. The store I go to got rid of Evo, Innova, California Naturals, etc. when the buyout happened with P&G.

I'm not sure if the ingredients of Innova/Evo have changed, but it looks like you aren't thinking about either of those brands. :]

We had a difficult time putting Kagome on homemade raw, cause her digestive system did not like it. So we decided to put her on kibble through her growing stage and try again later. I picked Taste of the Wild because the protein percentage is not too high, but not too low, it has a good calcium to phosphorus ratio and a lot less fancy fruit and veggies fillers. Added bonus was that it is about $20 bucks cheaper than Acana, Orijen, Evo at my store. We also sprinkle Solid Gold Seameal Mineral and Vitamin Supplement on it daily and add salmon oil about 3-4 times a week. I like grain fee kibble, but grains homecooked properly (rolled oats, buckwheat, brewer's yeast, millet, lentils, etc) is a good source of proteins for dogs.

  • I feed the Wetlands Formula to Tyson and I've had great success with it so far. Tyson was formerly on raw and did extremely well on that. The transition to kibble was a bit tough and his stool volume definitely increased, but I can't complain about the shape he's in on TOTW. He's lean, has plenty of energy, a nice thick coat, and almost no gas. I give it my vote.
  • I feed TOTW Pacific Stream and Sierra Mountain.

The Pacific Stream is the pups favourite, but the Sierra Mountain gives Nola less gas. They do well on both foods and I will be rotating them to give a little variety.

For me, it is hard to find a food that will suit both dogs because of different allergies between them. Bella has major grain allergies and Nola has major chicken and pork allergies. And I free feed, so they both have to eat the same thing. Both of these TOTW formulas work well for both of them. Plus the TOTW is about $20 cheaper for a 30 pound bag than any other grain free food. Definitely wallet and puppy tummy friendly! :)
  • I feed raw, but I always have some TOTW around as treats, if I forget to thaw out something for the dogs to eat or if they are sick or something (and I give it to them when I board them). I like Pacific Stream and Wetlands best, and they seem to like Pacific Stream best (but they are all crazy about fish). I like it, and think it is a pretty good kibble, esp. for the price!
  • I had Koda on Taste of the Wild as a puppy for a quick minute. It gave him gas like no tomorrow and loose stools. Poor pup. I took him off, but that was just our experience. He had the same problem with Orijen.

I had him on raw for the past year, but just transitioned him to The Great Life Buffalo. I'm totally into this food, and both him and Mei love it. I've never seen them go so crazy over food.

The small boutique I shop at has really good products, and I trust their knowledge to base my final decision on. I obsess a bit about Koda's diet. I want to make sure I'm making great choices for him.

Not to plug their store, but here's their list of products. I think it's a good starter for looking at food choices, http://www.wagsandwhiskerspetboutique.com/products.html

They do have Taste of the Wild.
  • I feed Eowyn TOTW Pacific Stream and I have a High Praire bag still untouched. Eowyn likes it and she has great fur, great energy and stool is normal and not too much. But she FARTS! BIG TIME!!! xD

I will probably try some new brand next time if I find something I like. I want to feed raw, but cannot at this time, which is why I chose TOTW. I have tried Orijen with succes on my shepherd, but it is SOOO expensive, so I wanted to try TOTW first.
  • I feed Taste of the Wild, Acana and Wellness Core.

By far, I have seen excellent results in all my dogs with Wellness Core. However, my dogs do fine on Taste of the Wild as well. My adult Shikoku male has Chicken allergies so he has to eat only the Pacific Stream formula and he does "okay" on it. I try to keep him on Wellness Core Ocean when concerning kibble (usually he'll have his own bag of food). My other 2 Shikoku do not have any allergies and do well on any of their formulas.
  • I give Taste of the Wild (Sierra Mountain) to my boys and because it's one of the only foods they both do well on. One seems to have a chicken allergy and the other had some problems digesting kibble that was higher in protein, but the Taste of the Wild seems to be some happy place.

The only other food I've had luck with (both of them) is Natural Balance because of the limited ingredient diets they offer. Other foods I've liked (but had to forfeit for one reason or another) were from the Wellness line or Acana.
  • I went to talk to the owner of the shop I go to, and asked her why she doesn't carry TOTW. She told me it's cause they are manufactured in the same place as other kibble such as diamond pet. She mentioned a few, but cannot remember all the names.

She doesn't like the fact that other kibbles are made in the same place and is afraid of other kibble getting mixed up and being put in bags. She feels it isn't a controlled enough environment to make sure the right kibble gets put in the right bags. So that is why she refuses to carry totw at her store. She told me if I wanted totw she would order it for me, but she won't put it on her shelves.
  • We fed Nikka, Taste of the Wild -salmon kibbles. She loved it but gained plenty of weight. Very high in calories. Still feeding it to the GSD Rex.
