Spay Recovery Time

Well, Kaiya is going to need to be spayed sooner rather than later. We have a trip planned (6 hours each way in the car, leaving Friday return home Sunday) starting on May 20. Unfortunately, this trip is for a family wedding, so it cannot be rescheduled nor can I not go. I certainly feel much more comfortable having Kaiya join us on the trip than to leave her at her first boarding experience so soon after her operation.
Her vet cannot get her onto her surgery schedule until 5/11. It has been over 15 years since I have had a spay experience, so I was wondering, what was the recovery time for your NK's spay?
Thanks :)

  • My Shiba girl recovered pretty fast. She seemed sore for a couple of days, but then was back to her normal activity (she's a particularly stoic dog though--she didn't show much when her ACL was torn either). Still, I think your girl will be ok, though I'd probably lift her in and out of the car, just in case.
  • Hmm... 9 days. That should be doable. Both of my girls were pretty much back to normal activity after about 5 days. I would just make sure to take lots of pit stops while driving and make sure she has plenty of water on the trip. I would discuss it with your vet, though, just to be on the safe side.

Also, I am assuming she is crate trained, so just make sure to give her a lot of crate time while you are away. I know it is going to be exciting to her being in a new place and around so many people. So you definitely do not want her to over do it. (I know you are probably going to say DUH! to this, but I know in the packing excitement and what not it is very easy to forget the dog crate!)
  • Mika bounced back very quickly. She would freak me out and I tried to keep her activity as low as possible. I think by day 3 she was basically back to herself.
  • Yeah, I think the suggested recovery time that vets tell you is 10 days. But everybody I've ever talked to said it was more like 3-5 before their pup was rearin to go. I think she'll be fine.
  • I think it's fine. Dogs tend to stay still while traveling anyway (in a car, in a crate rather than loose in a house and yard) so I don't think it'll do any harm. Is she a good traveler?
  • Thanks All. I was thinking that we should be fine, but its been so long...

She is a pretty good traveller, though most of our trips (except when we brought her home) are 45 minutes or less. She looks out the window for about the first 15 minutes or so and then curls up for a nap.
