Garmin GTU 10

edited June 2011 in Hunting & Working
I came across this nifty little device while looking for a new watch (my awesome, indestructible, waterproof watch drowned yesterday).

"GTU 10 is a GPS locator that combines a web-based tracking service with GPS technology so you can keep watch on children, pets and property. Tracking the GTU can done on the web using any computer or by downloading the free Garmin Tracker app. If your phone can receive text messages or email, you can use GTU.

How It Works
The GTU 10 is small, lightweight and waterproof. It easily attaches to a backpack, pet collar or whatever is important to you.

When you purchase a new GTU 10, it comes with 1 year of Standard Tracking (see the coverage map), so you’ll be ready to go once you register and activate it in your Garmin account.

Then, you can view the location of your GTU 10 on a map from the friendly confines of your computer. For an added level of convenience, you can download the free Garmin Tracker™ app for your mobile device to compare your current location to the direction and location of your GTU 10.

Using your computer or mobile device, you can also:

Create up to 10 geofences (virtual boundaries) for your device. When your GTU 10 enters or exits a geofence, we can send you an email or text message notification.
View track history of where your GTU 10 has been.
Customize device settings for optimal performance, including low battery/powered off notifications to let you know when it’s time to recharge or when the device has been turned off."

It seems like it would be a fairly inexpensive gadget for hunters or those who like to hike their dogs off-leash.

The battery life says anywhere from 1 day to 1 month, depending on which type of tracking you are using.

Any thoughts?

  • Forget the dogs, I am sticking this on my keys :P
  • sweet, what a great way to track my daughters when they go out on dates!
  • LMAO @gen. Come on you can't go a little more subtle approach and get them a tracking necklace or something? :P
  • @okiron - By the time his daughters are dating age (I think I am right on this), they will probably have the GPS devices small enough to put in a necklace! :)

Rina, I was actually thinking of attaching this to my TV remote. I never have a problem with my keys, but I often misplace the remote. The best place to look is in the fridge. (do not ask)
  • Psh I'll go the cheap way and give Micah a cell phone then turn Verizon's family locator on :P

Haha I've done the remote in the fridge before.
  • We have the Verizon family locator, but only on my younger sister's. I'm always threatening to stalk her :P lol
  • I personally would love to put one on Mei to see what she does when my parents are gone. There have been sightings of a black dog running around on the hills. Everyone says it's Mei, but when they get home she's right there to greet them.
  • I actually know a husky that had been spotted escaping out of his owner's backyard when they were at work and coming right back before they came home. The owners never found out until the neighbors told them. lol
  • lol... I wonder if there might be a place where you could rent one of these... Or a place that has a good return policy. :)
  • I have a few more years until my oldest will have zit faced punks lined up in front of my house so I need to start planning how to keep track of them. Maybe I could plant one of these things under a car seat or in a purse or some thing. Wish there was a smaller device.
  • Maybe you can get a cell phone tracker for the daughter? As for the guys lining up in front of your house, maybe you can invite them in and clean your gun while they're waiting? :-)
  • The issue is, at least for me, where I hike I have no cell service - and if I do it's not digital - so I wouldn't be able to connect to the web to see the device's location.

You know where I would love to use one of these tho - when shipping a dog! If Mochi would have had one of these on her we could have found her pretty quickly! Then again, I'm sure the airline would not like a device like that attached to the dog during flight.

  • I have looked into getting a SPOT: http://www.liveviewgps.com/spot+satellite+personal+tracker.html

It's a similar concept, but it also Bluetooth tethers to a mobile device

I also looked at this system: http://www.globaltrackinggroup.com/gps-tracking-device-ubi5000e.cfm

  • I'd be really interested in something like this, but like Brad, I'd want one with more coverage. I'd be the most worried about losing my dogs on a wilderness hike. I hate to seem technology-challenged, but I have to admit that the only thing keeping me from buying one right now is that I'm not 100% sure how to use them and what equipment is involved.
