I thought this was interesting to listen to Lew Olson author of Raw and Natural Nutrition for Dogs: The Definitive Guide to Homemade Meals

http://www.amazon.com/Raw-Natural-Nutrition-Dogs-Definitive/dp/1556439032/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313087603&sr=8-1

I'm not sure if it's a good book to read, but I plan to get it after the Madison meet up or maybe before we'll see.

Long talk, but interesting to hear her talk about her thoughts on raw diet.

  • I'm actually really proud of my mom. She switched Mei back to raw about two weeks ago. Mei was on a raw diet at my house with Koda. When Koda got hurt, and stopped coming around, Mei refused to eat. Not sure if the two are really related. Maybe it's because without me picking her up and running her on the hills across the street from their house made her less hungry, but she's doing great on raw. She'll never pass up a meal. Koda's going back to raw when the incision heals up. Now that he's out of his program for good, he can eat whatever I want him to eat. He'll be happy to be back on raw.
  • Bet Mei is happy to be on raw. =) Saya and Bella love raw diet. Saya eats it full time Bella just as a meal three times a week. Maybe I'll get the book and mom can read it might find it informational for her. =)

Raw has helped Saya she no longer reverse sneezes every night or when eating like she did when she was on wellness puppy food or wellness core ocean.

I plan to buy her own freezer so I can fill it up with good deals and local grassfed/free ranged meats and organs. Right now I'm sharing my parent's freezer and her and Bella's meat fills most of it up. lol

Saya's favorite is whole quail from hare today, beef gullet, saury, and green tripe. She likes chicken feet too.

Hope Koda does well on raw might help him recover.
  • Koda was on raw until around Christmas time. Then I switched him to freeze dried raw. With the liquid supplements he will be on now for the rest of his life raw is just honestly easier to hide them in. They will hopefully fight the onset of arthritis and I'm praying will save that other knee from going out. I never want to go through this again. And I never want him to go through this again.
  • Yeah raw seems help Saya too Chicken feet and beef gullet is good natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate.

Saya gets two or three chicken feet a week coarse the extra moisture in raw is good for dogs.
  • Where do you find beef gullet, Saya? That would be awesome. I found a whole frozen pound of quail legs at a local Asian grocer for $2. SCORE! Tsuki needs them for her hips and knees.

And thanks for the Lew Olsen links!
  • hare-today.com has it mypetcarnivore has it too, but they are based in Indianapolis and only do deliveries to surrounding areas they don't ship or if you live near you can make appointment to pick item up.

The beef gullet is good from what I can tell it's just beef cartilage.
Here's a couple of pictures of it when I got it.

Saya was able to eat it all it's cut into thick strips.

I plan to try mypetcarnivore since I can go get it in person..

I dunno much on different raw dog food sites that sell stuff.

This site sells tripe and also has trachea and gullet too.

Sorry to hear that Koda will be out of the program he was in. I always really admired that you/he were/was doing that and thought it was good for him and for the kids in the program.
  • Well on my Madison WI shiba picnic we always go to bad dog frida we went after the meet up and looked around saw they were doing a 20% off deal going on Sunday so we stayed around a bit and went to it to get some things for a good deal.

I bought a book on herbs for dogs it's pretty big and might be worth a read since I'm interested in nutrition and things also got The other end of the leash, For the love of a dog, Play together, stay together, Feisty fido, How to be the leader of the pack and have your dog love you for it!, and Cautious canine.

I also got a DVD of one of Karen shaw Becker's sessions or something it's called Functional, Fresh, Fast Food for our Furry Friends.

    http://www.naturalpetproductions.net/dvds.html

Dr. Karen Becker discusses the ins and outs of feeding an evolutionary diet to your dogs and cats.
I watched the DVD it was 4hours long I think. Not bad most stuff I already knew before, some I didn't, but still I thought it was worth getting.

Doesn't really talk about how to start a raw or home cook diet, but kinda talks about the benefits, of it, and the disadvantage of feeding bad quality kibble. talks bit about Micro nutrients stuff like that.

She talks about how variety is good for dogs and cats how rotating different kibble or feeding fresh food is good etc.

The bad dog frida also had a DVD of her's where she talks about raw diet and home cook diet I think, but I didn't get it thought I'd order it later, but sadly her site doesn't have it for sale so kinda makes me wish I asked mom for the extra $5 to help me buy it.. I was 5$ short after buying the books and the one DVD..

They also had this book too not sure if it's good book with good info, but I'll probably buy it eventually.

I thought I'd change the title of the thread to raw diet thread.. I'll try to add info, pictures whatever.

Anyone else can put pictures of their dog eating raw or info if you want to.

This is the herb book I got they only had the hardcover one. It's a bit book has lots info on different herbs and pictures of them and stuff.
Going to take me a long time to read it all.

I mainly feed meat, bone in items, organs and plenty of variety with fruit or cooked veggie as a treat every so often, but I thought it'd be neat to read up on herbs for dogs I've given her fresh ground parsley from my garden before she seemed to like it mixed with her egg, caned fish or ground meat..
