  • oh wow, he's really going at it! :)
  • Dang, he's intent on doing some damage to that rabbit! Are you gonna hunt with him when he's older?
  • That is crazy.....in a good way!
  • @jikjak - It definitely looks like you have a new hunting companion. :)
  • Ghost 1 Hare 0
Nice job on the soundtrack too lol.
  • ghost was so excited when he saw/smelled that hare and he didnt want to let it go.
im trying to dry out the skin and then hopefully i can make it into some sort of training toy for him.

id love to hunt with him when he is older but im not sure how to train him for that. maybe someone here can point me in the right direction?
  • Nice vid! He looks like he has plety of potential too. What kind of hunting do you want to do with Ghost? If you want to start training him, start with his recall and walk him without a leash as much as possible. Too much leash time out in the field, IMHO will ruin a NK hunting dog and make things really difficult to creat the connection between dog and hunter.

He's such a awesome little pup though, I hope you can hunt with him!
  • well over here in BC, we have lots of deer and black bear (wolves, mtn lions and coyotes too). if lucky enough to get a limited entry hunting ticket then we can also go for elk, moose, and grizzly.
im not sure hes suitable for hunting those types of wildlife but i believe the shikoku were used for deer and boar.

unfortunately we dont have wild boar but i would love to hunt that. hopefully in the future i will be able to go somewhere and try it out.

ive been working on his recall and hes getting pretty good at it, but i havent tried walking him off leash yet. any other tips?
  • I would say work him on small game since he's really into rabbits might even beable to work him on bobcats, bears, and raccoons too. I would definately get him going off leash out in the woods as much as possible, once he figures out that the leash is going to keep him from going places your gonna have a hard time training him off leash. With my Kishu pups I rarely put the leash on whil they were young and the only time they have a leash on is whn walking near the house. The most important thng is to show Ghost that being off leash is fun and keep him near you with treats and if it makes you feel more comfortable, get him a GPS collar so you know where he is at all times.
  • tried some recall with him earlier at the park which was full of distractions and it didnt go so well.
maybe i should get the gps collar for more piece of mind but im also worried that an animal might attack him if he takes off in the woods while hes off leash.

how is the recall with your dogs when the prey drive kicks in?
  • Non existent. Lol. Once they are committed that's it. But they do not wonder off too far. I let them hunt and they check in with me every so often but they will come to me when I call them if they are near. I always keep a little bag of treats to keep them wanting to come back.
  • I did something very similar to that with Conker. I ditched the leash training and when for long-line and off-leash training first. I guess that's one of the reasons I'm able to have a safe off-leash Shiba.
  • i guess im going to have to just give it a shot and hope for the best.
  • Here are some pictures taken when Ghost was almost 10 weeks old. the other dog is Kasia, my friend's mini australian shepherd dog, she is about 7 months old and runs circles around Ghost.
these two will play until they are dead tired, Ghost will literally plop down on the ground and fall asleep after vigorously playing with her.

  • hey guys here are the latest pics of ghost that were taken a few days ago at a local dog park. he is playing with my friend's belgian malinois, who is trained in french ring, and his pomeranian. the pom didnt like him too much but he had fun chasing balls with the malinois.

u can really see how much hes changed since i got him and also the darkness coming out on his coat. ive also included a butt shot so maybe some of you know how to interpret that to see how dark he may or may not get. maybe some of u black sesame owners can compare! lol

  • A bunny? Nice catch! Saya my shiba inu has caught a young rabbit in my yard. Her recall is actually pretty good and she'll come back. Coarse not all shiba inu are good off leash.. Coarse I never do it where cars would be.

Did you feed the rabbit? I gave Saya's her's after I froze it for a month. :)
  • Awesome pictures! He has gotten quite a bit darker. :) And yes, that poor pom in the picture haha.
  • we made rabbit stew with it. ghost didnt actually catch it, my friend shot the hare and i let him go check it out afterwards.
i really hope i am able to get him to be responsive while off leash.
  • i think he played too roughly with the pop and he (pom) didnt like it at all. in the end i just kept ghost away from him and let him chase the ball with the malinois.
i guess thats the rude play behavior of the shikoku?

should that be something i should be working on to correct or should they be left alone to play as they like?
  • Great play footage! Oh, indeed, it looks like he enjoyed "battling" that rabbit, lol.

As for the Pom...well, there really isn't much you can do. Shiku pups are highly persistent. The best thing really is to redirect his attention elsewhere. I think what you did was the right choice. Keeping him away from the Pom and allowing him to hang out with the Mali. Keep trusting your instincts.
  • I agree with Corina (@ShikokuSpirit) too. There is not too much you can do about shikoku puppies and play, especially with a smaller dog like a pom. My male grew up with a friend's Boston, but when he got just bigger than the Boston, we stopped the play dates. Same thing happened with Sachi and the Boston. The poor Boston didn't enjoy the shikoku puppies when they were bigger than him, but was fine when they were smaller than him.

I think you just need to choose other dogs that enjoy that play style. When I had Siberians, I had to do the same thing as they play rough to and not all dogs like that...
  • Yeah, the only dogs that my Shikoku can play with are other NK. Even then it's pretty hit and miss.
  • i guess i have to let him meet more and more different dogs and hopefully he will find some friends that will tolerate his shika behavior.

yesterday ghost and kasia (mini aussie shepherd) got into a scrap over a piece of wood. i hope it doesnt happen often, it got a little rough and i found some cuts on ghost.

Well it was a disappointing boxing match last night, i was hoping for Pacquiao to KO Marquez, instead he squeaked out a close win by decision. unfortunately i ended up losing a bunch of money as well since i bet for a KO on rounds 4 through 8. anyone here catch the fight?

anyways on a better note here are some pics taken of Ghost and his brother Kuma! Eljefespeaks and Kuma came over on Thursday (11/10/11) and we let the two brothers play in the backyard. they didnt seem too friendly with each other at first but after a little while they seemed to get along but they sure did play rough! some ended up being blurry because i was in the wrong shooting mode on my camera, that sucked because there could have been some sweet action shots.

well here is the flood of pics! sorry if its too many :)

*Ghost is the darker one with a red collar and Kuma is wearing a green harness*

  • I especially love those running shots, but the whole set is fantastic for their expressions. Love the dirty tongue one, too. :)
  • These are fantastic! Thanks for the puppy spam!
  • Love the shot of the paw in the face!

It's also great to seem them handicapping with each other.

Looks like a great play date!
  • Awesome pics! Noticed their coloring is quite different...nice to see a mini family reunion. :)
  • i think it may be due to ghost having more of his outer coat at this point in time, but hopefully he gets more of his mother's colors. its going to be interesting to see how kuma's color turns out when more of his outer coat starts growing.
