Question about importing

edited November 2011 in General
Do you have to be Japanese, Japanese descent or have a partner that is one of those two to be able to import a nihon ken to the US?

Comments

  • No not at all. It makes it easier to know some one over there to help with translating.
  • I am not Japanese at all. I'm 100% white boy, and I have imported a few Kai from Japan. As Gen wrote, you just need to know the right people (and this is a good place to find those people).
  • Ok that's what I thought. Yeah I'm working on the language and the meeting people I'm working on too. I was just asking because someone told me that I couldn't import because I'm not Japanese. I was looking at kishu.
  • That is definately not true ;) I have a friend, who's 100 % danish and she imported a kai from Japan. If you want a kishu from Japan, maybe Shigeru can help you? @TheWalrus
  • LOL white boy.
  • I have also import from Japan and I'm not Japanese. I don't even speak one word of Japanese. It just took time to make good contacts there. But many Japanese breeder seemed to be interested in selling puppy to the " mysterious" North.
  • There are kishus here in the us, Carleen is the only breeder that I know of. I have two kishus, although they did come from Japan.
  • LOL too funny. Well I'm a mutt, but no Japanese in me. lol But yeah I need to meet others and get out there to learn more about these dogs.

@Shishiinu: I have been in contact with Carleen and she helped me setup the meet up with the 2 kishus I met this past Saturday. The lady I met says she's a good friend of Carleen and she's the one who told me I couldn't import a kishu unless I was Japanese. The information I got from this lady did not make any sense to me from what I've learn on this forum about importing. There are others things that are making me consider about importing too.
  • @renae,
The lady you met likely had some truth to her words...until this forum's existence came along. With it, you gained access to knowledgeable people all over North America as well as Japan that can help and assist you in importing Kishu.

I know I would've never heard of Shikoku, nor found people nearby to help me import one without this forum!

Um, before this forum came along, people have imported Shikoku and Kishu without being Japanese.

For instance, I credit Mike Ross for hooking up Rene Hesselman with Shikoku for Rene and some Kishu for Rene's friend. Rene formed van Veghel kennel, and Egmato kennel came out of van Veghel. (Yes, I'm that old to have seen that. :-p)

Here's a picture of one of the Kishu. He was a young male in the pic:

  • @ayk, I'm not saying this forum was the sole catalyst for breaking through that barrier. Just saying it helped gaining access to people that have the experience and making it easier to contact them.

  • I certainly would not have been able to figure out the possibilities for importing from Japan, had it not been for this forum, but that does not mean it could not have been done ofcourse...

Good looking kishu, does he belong to Monique? She is the only kishu breeder I know of in Europe?

@renae - So lucky! I was in contact with Carleen for a while, trying to meet some Kishu in my area but that never really happened. I'm still on her list for a pup (but I'm hoping for a Taro x Koyuki kid!) and I have never actually met a Kishu yet. I still have time though.

Maybe @Crimson02 is right - maybe she's just not aware that you CAN import dogs without speaking Japanese as long as you know the right "web of people" or just the right person. (I'd hate to think she was trying to imply the only place you can get a Kishu is from Carleen.)
  • @Brego_mellon_nin I couldn't say for sure if that Kishu is Monique's or not. Rene had emailed that pic to me many years ago. For a while, there was a link to the Kishu kennel on the old van Veghel website, but I couldn't say what that Kishu kennel name was.
  • @crispy: pretty soon! I'm waiting till after this weekend to do a litter announcement so standby.

I know with anything, especially with these rare breeds, you need to know someone that works or handles in that subject. That's how people get connections and meet new friends. Anyways this forum has been a lot of help to learn more about these dogs. I'll continue looking into the breed and also the option of getting a kishu here in the US or importing.

Thank you to everyone for helping me answer my question! ^-^
