Toki pictures....his first "hike" :)

edited November 2011 in Akita (秋田犬)
Firstly, does anyone have an issues with their puppies eating acorns/spiky sweet gum balls/ect... and ROCKS :((( I try my best to fish them out of his mouth and keep him away (at least they are always very tiny), but he loves to eat dirt, lick metal, chew on my car keys. What is with this guy?? :/
Any suggestions on how to stop this behavior? I hope it is just a teething puppy stage.

Anyway, I am super stoked about Toki's first hike outside of home so I wanted to share his adventure on the interwebs. I wish I had gotten better video of him rolling around in the grass like a crazy mad man, but my iphone didn't really capture it very well. He saw some geese and some new people, of which he was surprisingly really happy to meet. When I took him to Home Depot, he was shy, but opened up a little bit at the end of our hardware adventure. Here is a picture of him in the "hodep"

He also had an issue with getting out of the car, teehee :P
He learned though when we got home, so no worries.

here are the rest of the good pictures I took with my phone. Some are edited in photoshop, like editing out the leash/collar, or making the background look prettier. I tried my best to not alter his coat color so what you see is really what he really looks like.

  • Looks like fun!
  • Hehe, look at that little ball of fuzz. He's super cute and looking rather adventurous!

You have no idea how adorable I think that little video is. It brought me back to puppy time. London (my Malamute) used to have trouble with the car when he was super small (or... relatively... small).

Even before I got my Jeep--we had a Sunfire he hated hopping in and out of. He'd always whine for "help". He still does it when he's hopping in the Jeep now--he'll peddle his back foot and grunt a bit and if I don't help he's like "WELL, alright, FINE. I'll do it -myself- then!"

Your posts on Toki make me want an Akita like life. There's an Akita at work that does it to me, too. Something about Akita, i'unno. They're just awesome.
  • waw... so cute...I love the last picture... :)
  • @Crispy ...go get an akita, like, right now. do it!! :D
Toki also has issues with going up and down stairs. He has finally conquered the indoor carpeted stairs, but stone, outdoor stairs are very scary to him, lol!
  • Man look at that little fur ball. He's a cute little dude!
  • Awesome pictures. He is totally kissable! :D

Haha I too recognize the car refusal ;) My akita got over it fairly quickly though and had no issues getting in or out afterwards...
  • Toki is extremely cute!

The picture in the shopping cart is super cute! :)
  • Shoushuu use to eat small rocks from the yard when he was a young adolescent. He seems to have lost interest now and has grown out of it. Just keep an eye on Toki...pups will be pups. Though I still have issues with my adult dogs sometimes eating random stuff off the ground if it looks/smells tasty. Usually it's a leaf, old food or containers in which food use to be inside. Try not to let him grab stuff, if possible. Keep fishing them out of his mouth if he does and tell him "ick" or "no" and redirect his attention to something he can mouth.

Toki looks so soft and cuddly! Can I barrow him? I need a cute, fuzzy pillow!
  • @ShikokuSpirit thanks for the insight. I know puppies everywhere have got to be putting rocks and dirt and other odd things in their mouths, but it is nice to hear that other's have gone through it and survived. I'll just keep fishing stuff out of his mouth!

Also, Toki keeps me warm (yes, it is cold in texas!), so I'm afraid I cannot let your borrow him until spring ;P
  • toki is very cute i live the colours in his brindle coat !
  • He's adorable!!!

THE FIRST command I teach a dog is leave it. It helps with the unwanted eating behaviors. My sister got a 9 week old rescue on Christmas, and that dog knew leave it within three days with me. lolol.

To get Toki to try new things like jumping out of the car, give guidance by luring with treats.
  • he has such an awesome coat!
  • @tjbart17 please tell me how you teach "leave it" so successfully?? :)))
I would LOVE to teach him that; were currently working on "drop". He is teething though, will this make it harder to teach him?

By now, he is okay with getting in and out of vehicles, even the big expedition, especially since he is a lot bigger. I just walked really far away and he didn't like that, so he figured it out for himself to get out to be near me. Kinda mean, lol, but the next day he had it down :P

Also, a little bit more update, for the most part, he no longer eats acorns! He has also turned into quite the watchdog. He has saved us from Christmas lights, leaf blowers, and BBQ pits.

    Thanks for the compliments everyone!
  • Hahaha! Conker likes to protect me (or just himself) from signs in people's yards. The blue and white real estate ones are the worst. I can never get him to walk by one without him giving it evil glares.
  • Ah that it the oddest thing! Lol! Now when I see a for sale sign, I'm gonna think of conker, haha!
  • He is super cute, and has that happy, confident look my AA did as a pup! Yay!

Oskar was seriously concerned about flags. He'd never noticed them before, then one windy day, he did, and he was first scared, then barked, and was very suspicious of them for months afterwards!

Can't wait to see more pics of him as he grows!
  • Lol! It's funny the things our dogs will take very seriously, and the things they don't notice too... Toki used to never notice birds, even when I took him to parks and there were huge white geese walking around. Then...I guess about a week ago...there was a flock of black birds on the ground, had to been about 500-1000, and THAT'S what it took for him to finally start noticing birds. Now all he wants to do is chase them, haha, silly puppy!

I should post some pictures of him soon on here, his ears have stuck up! :D
