Shikoku comparison

I'm thinking about maybe getting a Shikoku in the future and it seems that most members have gotten their Shikoku from either Katja or Peggy. I'm curious from those who have gotten their pups from either breeder how are your dogs temperaments? To those who have gotten a pup from both breeders how do your dogs compare in terms of temperament.

  • I have one dog from each breeder, a female from Katja and a male from Peggy. My male is 4 years old and my female is about to turn 2 years old. Both have stellar temperaments, with the male in general being very outgoing and gregarious while the female is super friendly to people she knows but reserved with new people. You can read more about their temperament on the thread I started on Male/female gregariousness. It is hard to compare and contrast them, but I did some on the other thread. I think a lot of it is to do more with male vs female traits.

My dog is from TK x Sweety and my female is from Tenshouu (aka Kuma) x Chigusa (Kimi).

And for full transparency, I did work with both Katja and Peggy right from the beginning as a planned breeder in the future. They both knew and supported my plan to become another shikoku breeder. Actually because of that, I had to wait a while for my female because I was looking for a certain pairing from (mostly) imported lines. As she is coming of breeding age, if all goes well in the future and there is interest, I will try to breed them. Hopefully it would go well, but a few others have tried and it is not always successful with young dogs/bitches.

@edgewood thanks for your reply. I totally missed the other thread lol
  • We have 2 females from Katja and one female from Peggy. Then we have a male import. I think it's hard to try and come up with qualities that are specific to Katja's vs Peggy's dogs (produced). Other than, maybe, the way they are raised by Katja vs. Peggy there really shouldn't be that noticeable of a difference since their dog's bloodlines are so closely related.

Katja has brought in a few more imports, and then Katja and Peggy share one import. I guess as Katja starts to breed more of her imports, and assuming Peggy doesn't use any of those imports (which is doubtful), you *might* start to see some differences in temperament emerge that could be linked to the difference in bloodlines. But, for now, I think their 2 programs share enough in common to where a comparison would be simply a comparison of individual dogs and not bloodlines.

I hope it is a VERY LONG TIME before a distinct difference in the Shikoku Ken from one North American kennel to another North American kennel is seen, as that would point to a lack of cooperation among the breeders, and that would be bad for the breed.

You might get better information asking for comparisons between specific pairings.
