Interesting Items in the Summer Akiho Magazine

I got my latest copy of the Akiho newsletter. Some people are able to read it, I just look at the photos :)

I found the following items very interesting. First they had an illustration regarding white marks on the back of the head and neck on red JAs. The illustration seems to mark proper Urajiro. I also noticed a photo of American Aktias and the photo set seems to document the progression of the dogs.

Enjoy

  • That's neat. I wish I could read Japanese so I knew that was being said though.

I have NEVER seen a red Japanese Akita with the full red muzzle and red under the eyes of a Shiba Inu. This illustration has exactly that. The NIPPO judge who came out to the Classic in Ohio last year said that if the Akita's muzzle wasn't red, "just go home." He also said that the Meiyosho red male which he had a photo of was a "bad example" of the breed when it was pointed out that he had a white muzzle.

(The other white markings are fine, I'm just tired of this apparent obliviousness to reality that the one picture illustrates... )
  • I believe that the illustration is trying to ward off white collar and mis-markings on the face. Notice that they didn't say anything about just a white dot or mark on the back.

I was looking through the rest of the magazine and I noticed a couple with the full red muzzle but it was very very faint. I think I might pester the branch into buying a couple of wickets. I saw them listed in there. I'm sure it will cost but we need at least one.

    Wicket!

I got a miniature horse measuring stick recently. It was half the price of a quality dog wicket and accurate enough for my home use - better that a "do-it-yourself" wicket would be for sure. Gojira would never pass the height requirements, so I guess its just as well I don't have to worry about it anymore. I am very pleased with Ghidora and Mosura's heights though! They're well above the minimum, and I think above average for our US population as well.

    Gojira - 21.75"
    Gryphon - 23.75"
    Mosura - 24"
    Ghidora - 25.5"
  • What are the height requirements again?
  • Sean could confirm but I think AKIHO is 58cm females and 62cm males, UKC is 22.5" females and 24" males.

The male is 66.7 cm (2 shaku plus 2 sun, approximately 26.2 inches)* tall. while the female is 60.6 cm (2 shaku. approximately 23.8 inches)* tall with plus or minus 3.02 cm (1 sun, approximately 1.2 inches)* allowable for both male and female.

    So males 25-26.2-27.4". Females 22.6-23.8-25"

    UKC is what Claire stated.

Neat, I just took a trip over to Wikipedia University to learn about shaku. The exact definition is 10/33 meter = 1 shaku and 1 shaku = 10 sun.
