  • We wondered if the dog was "grinning" with his curled lip....because sometimes he did it when he seemed happy. But then, sometimes it was clearly a warning, like he did right before he bit Dani. :( I think something was not right with him, and whether it was thyroid, seizure disorder, abuse or some mix of all those things we'll probably never know. I know he must have had some bad experiences with people though--there was just too many signals that went beyond the fearful from undersocialization type stuff.

And I loved that typo too! *lol*
  • That's very sad. :o(
  • @brada1878-- lol. Thanks but no thanks. I don't know how you guys do it, this has been crazy for me.

@shibamistress- Kilbe does that lip curling thing too. But she also likes to mouth on my hand ( does not hurt). So I have one hand in her mouth and the other hand to pet her sometimes. It's kind of crazy because her mouth is so big, but she really doesn't bite down. It seems to have a calming effect. Weird dog behavior.

Anyhow, I'm glad he is at the humane society now, at least thy r Irving him a chance.
  • I'm glad that you were able to find a progressive shelter to work with. I didn't know if that was an option in your area, but I'm glad you were able to find one. I really do sympathize. It's so hard when you feel like you have to navigate everyone's priorities in a possibly litigious rescue climate with so many unknowns... Ugh.
  • And as an update, she asked them to check his thyroid levels, too, and it wasn't clear if they were going to do it or not, so she called today and said she would pay to have them run the thyroid test. So it is kind of a parting gift of information for the shelter and, hopefully, for another home for him. If it is thyroid, it is treatable, and I know when my GSD had thyroid problems, once we treated it all his aggression issues stopped, and he never bit another person again.

If it's not thyroid with this dog....well, that will still be useful information for them to have. So I'm really glad she is doing this, and also that they are willing to listen (she said they were really good at listening to her information, and were glad to have it).

I'm hoping for the best for this dog. He had so many good qualities--not reactive with other dogs, walked on the leash like a dream, was sweet, but....his scary moments were pretty scary, especially since they seemed so out of character.
  • I am very late jumping in :(

I am very sorry your friend has had such a rough time. I hope the pup can be placed and I am very glad you found a place to take him. Hopefully it will all work out alright!

Is she still looking for a dog or is she taking a breather for now?

@brada1878.. if a Kai puppy is up for grabs I have the perfect home in mind... mine!!!! ;)
