the har-vest

Check this out: http://www.abetterpet.com/har-vest/

It's a harness/vest that is also supposed to have calming features of the thundershirt. I first read about it in an article about dogs with mental problems (guess why I was reading about that--I'll give you a hint, it involves a girl Shiba I know) on Dog Star. That article (part two, where the vest is mentioned) is here: http://www.dogstardaily.com/blogs/mental-health-and-illness-dogs-part-ii-ptsd-revisited

Anyone used it?

It's a bit pricey, but it's kind of cool looking too, and sounds like it could be useful for anxious and/or reactive dogs.

  • interesting.
  • I'm a little skeptical. It just looks like a dog backpack.
  • Hmm... Interesting... But why not just wear a thundershirt under a regular harness (which is what I do with Nola)?
  • @sunyata I just bought thundershirt for Ife and thought can I use harness with it. Does it still work even wearing harness with it? Oh and all tips related to using thundrshirt are welcome :).
  • I don't know--I was just intrigued by it overall. In the post from DogStar Daily, the trainer notes that the when they took the Har-Vest off the dog who was wearing it, she immediately became a bit more reactive/anxious, which suggests it does indeed work as it is supposed to (with the calming effect of the thundershirt), but you know that's just one review.

I don't know any more about it than this--it just looked intriguing to me, if someone was looking for a multi-use item. The way it can be used as a pack is kind of cool too.

I hadn't thought of using the thundershirt with a harness, but Bel (who wears the thundershirt) doesn't usually need to go out with it on. I don't think any of her harnesses would fit over it, but I haven't tried, either!
  • Ife has car anxiety and bought the thundershirt for that. And I usually put Ife to harness which can be connected to seat belt. So that's why I'm asking if you could use thundershirt under harness.
  • Ehhh I figure it's probly the same thing to just use a full harness (web master or doubleback) that "hugs" a good portion of the body, and then no need to buy a harness + a shirt-harness :P Cool idea though
  • @MirkaM - the ThunderShirt works well with the harnesses that I have used (the DT harness and the Webmaster).
