Freaking OUT!!!!!!

Came home from work today to find Ryu roaming around and an opened bottle of Excedrin Migraine!!!!!!!! There were about 8 pills strewn across the floor. I'm not positive if he ingested any of it but knowing him, he probably swallowed at least one to taste it...I called the vet immediately and they said that if he ingested more than half a tablet, he should show signs of appetite loss and be lethargic. So far he's his usual energetic self and just ate his supper so I'm trying to stay postive. The only thing I notice out of the ordinary is that he is clearing his throat (or gagging, I'm not sure). Oh my goodness, I am freaking out - I think I'm going to watch him like a hawk tonight and maybe stay home tomorrow..... i feel like a horrible mother!!!! augh! I wonder if I should take him to the Vet ER just in case?

Uh oh hope all is well.

Honestly I would take him just for my own piece of mind. But I'm a worry wart.

Mika once got into a box of baking soda....uber bad. We gave her some hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting and then took her to the vet. Sounds like Ryu might be fine, tho. Don't worry too much.

shit, that's scary! Yes, I would be wigging out! Honestly, I would probably just take him to an emergency vet just in case, the money and time it will take to do that will be far less stressful than sitting up all night wondering if he is ok.

    Keep us posted, good luck!

I agree with Rina and Brad, just take him to the vet. Worst case scenario he's completely fine and you spend a couple hundred bucks. Best case he did swallow something and it gets taken care of sooner rather than later.

    Keep us posted.

Eeeeek! I hope his okay!  Keep us updated on his status!

Thanks everyone! Well, spoke to the vet and all is well, no signs of injestion. He is his usual crazy Ryu-self... boy was I terrrrrified though! Things like this always seem to happen when Tim's away on business and I have no way of reaching him Undecided

LOL, yep he seems fine to me!  Im glad everything is ok.  That was a scare!

Yikes, that's quite a scare!  Glad he's okay.

Yea, he looks ok to me. :c) Thank goodness.

Pam. Tenji chewed the top of an Excedrin bottle and there were capsules all over I freaked out too.  We found all the pills except one but I don't think that he ate it.  He just likes to chew plastic and was only interested  in the plastic bottle top.  He is a rascally boy.  My hair is turning gray! Anyway,he was fine.

Although I'm a bit late for this, I'm just glad he's ok. It must have been quite a scare!

This just makes me think that I need a childlock for the kitchen detergent cabinet. Although for now, Kuma won't have access to the kitchen while alone, Nyx will stay in there.

Just remember that hydrogen peroxide can make a dog vomit if you need it too.  It could come in handy if he eats something else that is nasty in the future.  Glad to hear/see that Ryu is doing well though.

Nemo threw up 4 times on Wednesday.  Not sure why, but I'm guessint it has somethign to do with the fact that the terraces and lawns are a garbage buffet now that the snow is melting.  He loves to snack on things as we take walks.  No I don't try to let him but his search for food sniffing posture looks just like his sniffing for a spot to pee posture.  Then if he grabs something he runs to the end of his leash and chews really fast as I try to get to him.  He hasn't thrown up since then, but our comforter is at the dry cleaner.

    Awe, he's perfect!!

    oh my gosh!!!

once we had a clogged drain in my bathtub (mind
you - our bathroom door is usually closed but our apartment structure
is crap) and we had a foster basset hound that could nose the door open
    - well on this day he did that and had his nose so close to the drain
and his ears were covered in that awful draino smell and i was sure he
had to have ingested some of it!

i was mortified! i took him
outside, hosed him off, hosed out his mouth, called the draino 800
number to ask for help and they said - just watch him.

     he
was fine, i think he didn't swallow any or enough, didn't vomit, he was
fine. i was worse off from the stress of it all!

    now that
we have the shibas, we 'child' proofed our existence so nothing crazy
yet! except a sharpie marker and half a scarf that both 'repeated' on
    them outside. how fun.

    i'm glad Ryu is OK!

Thanks guys! We slept OK last night - I swear, if I hadn't seen the pill bottle, I wouldn't have noticed anything different with him. I think he is the same as Tenji - just wanted to chew on the bottle. But anyway whew! I am so glad it's the weekend so maybe I can put together a Romi/Brad style play pen!! :-)

Brandon & Barbara: This may be a silly question but if we do need to induce vomiting, how much hydrogen peroxide or how to administer it?

Brandon : I swear Ryu is like a lawnmower - he picks up anything and everything during our walks - his favorite is dried up gum on the sidewalk;  I take some treats with me to lure him to drop it... it's never a leisure stroll in the woods for us Undecided

Aww silly Ryu, scaring us all like this. Glad everything turned out fine :)

    Animal Poison Control Center

    As the premier animal poison
control center in North America, the APCC is your best resource for any
    animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If
you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous
substance, make the call that can make all the difference: (888) 426-4435. A $60 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.

I have used them 3 times already. You talk to actual vets. It may have saved their lives a couple times.

Moto like prescription bottles. Not the contents, just the bottles. He got a bottle of Jay's Singulair. Opened it. And spread the pills all over the bed. I shit a brick I was so scared. But I found all the pills.

Two nights ago he stole a chocolate chip cookie, ate everything but the chips. I think he figured out that it was the chocolate that made him have to stay at the hospital. Smart little devil

Glad to hear it that it wasn't a problem. Pups do tend to eat gross stuff; Mochi is very fond of gecko jerky.

Well, hello my fellow islander Wink

Hope to bring Ryu to town sometime to meet Mochi - how's Koda?!

Wow jess, that is very impressive of Moto!

Glad the lil stinker is ok!  All the times we almost have a heart attack because of the dogs!  We spent a night in the er because Niko had a soft goose egg on the top of her head....right after she ate the plastic container of super glue.  She had 6cc's of fluid removed!  The other week she was hacking a lot and had some bright red blood in her poop so I think it was one of her many toys she ate.  Chad let her get in the toy box....unsupervised for a minute and there was terror, guts and gore everywhere!  Oh the stuffing!!!!!!!!!!

Jessica - That's really interesting that Moto didn't eat the chips... he sounds like me, I like the cookie part more than the chocolate part.

I too am glad Ryu is ok!

  • edited November -1

When Jay isn't home, I bake them without chocolate, just the pecans  and sprinkle a little brown sugar on top. I like the cookie part best.

I strongly suggest keeping the poison control # on speed dial. They are so helpful!

Pam: Glad to see that Ryu is OK! We always call our emergency vet hospital nearby, whenever we have a dog scare. They've been great about assessing the situation and making the call to bring them in or not.

Dorothy: Do you ever take Tenji to dog parks? Our Shiba Harlow loves playing with the 'big guys' and refuses to play with dogs her size or smaller. Her best pal is a Samoyed named Sir Fur. [Koshi is not allowed near Sir Fur, as he almost bit him in the nose just before he went to Westminster!]

Ryu- Koda is great, full of p*ss and vinegar and keeping us all on our toes. She gets her last shot on 16 April, so some time around the end of next month we're going to set a date for her "coming out party" at the park. Needless to say, we're looking forward to meeting Ryu as well.

Sorry I'm late getting back. A busy couple of days...

I never remember and always have to look on the interenet...This is from the Animal Poison Control Cnter...

If convulsions, seizures, shock or lethargy are
    present as symptoms,

    do NOT induce vomiting!!

In ALL poisoning cases, please seek veterinary care immediately!

Vomiting is only a temporary fix to give you enough time to get your
    pet to a vet.

    To
induce vomiting,  give orally (by mouth
    )

    ONE of the following:

    Hydrogen Peroxide

Three percent hydrogen peroxide (not hair coloring
    strength peroxide)
    is quite effective
in making dogs and cats vomit. You must be sure to
    use three percent peroxide
    . Despite the label indicating
that hydrogen peroxide is toxic, it is safe to give
to dogs for this purpose. It is considered toxic
since it induces vomiting and therefore does not
    stay in the body.

The appropriate dose of hydrogen peroxide is one
teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. If you have
an oral syringe, one teaspoon equals 5 cc or 5 ml.
Once given, walk your dog around or gently shake the
stomach area to mix the peroxide with the stomach
contents. Vomiting should occur within 15 to 20
minutes. If no vomiting occurs, you can safely
repeat the three percent hydrogen peroxide once. If
it is still not effective, your dog may need to be
seen by a veterinarian for stronger vomiting
    medication.

Once the hydrogen peroxide is given, it is important
to watch your pet so that he does not re-ingest the
substance. If there is concern about toxicity,
collect and take a sample of the vomitus to your
    veterinarian

I have no idea what the other option is...It just says HP.
