Looking for a Shiba

Not for me! LOL

Can someone just give me a short list of reputable Shiba breeders (maybe 4 to 6) who are near or willing to ship to New York? Thanks!

Phil from Tengai shiba is on the shiba side not sure if that breeder posts on Nihon ken forum or not..

    http://www.tengaishibas.com/

I think there is few owners of their shiba who post here or on shiba forum forgot their names sorry..

This is another breeder I seen mentioned.
    Bali Hai Kennel
    Ridge, New York
    Long Island Area
    www.balihai-shibas.com

I have no experience with these breeders so not sure. I have emailed Tengai shiba once, but I was able find breeder bit closer drive..

Rodel shiba is an option in Pennsylvania though

    Mac is from rodel shiba

    Good luck on the search.
  • I know Kathi of Bali Hai since she is right down the block from me, and I would have to say that her dogs are really great. They have really good temperaments, even Tetsu gets along with all of them and he generally hates intact males.

I would like to add two nearby NY that should be avoided like the plague, Right Puppy Kennel and Icewind. Too much bad stuff behind those two and it's worth mentioning them as far too many people purchased a pup from them without knowing how bad they are until it's too late.
  • Thanks! I passed that along.
  • sure ya don't want to get sucked into the shiba and akita trap? ;)
  • Right Puppy is busted for falsifying health records, so perhaps they'll get closed down. but yeah, both are awful.
  • I know a few in Ohio and mi that will ship. Let me know if they want the info

Here is the link from the National Shiba Club of America that lists breeders:

    http://www.shibas.org/breeders.html

    And the NYC Shiba Rescue:
    http://nycshibarescue.org/
(I looked through their listing. They have some younger Shibas available for adoption.)
  • @jellyfish Nope. Just had some random person call me ask if I sold Shibas too. She was nice enough I felt like going a little extra to send her some info instead of just saying "No" and parting ways.
  • Holy crap, for a minute I thought you had gotten into the shiba trap.

Noooo! If I am going to get a small dog it will be a merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi or maybe a silver brindle Hokkaido. But first I have to get over small-dog-paws. Plus if I have room for another dog, I don't see why I wouldn't make it an Akita. ;)
  • @poeticdragon-

A small dog I have considered, the Swedish Vallhund. Saw one at the dog park awhile ago. Very nice dog.

  • @poeticdragon silver brindle hokkaido! The rarest of the rare! :) I wish...
  • Might as well shoot for the moon right?
  • I like the silver brindle dutchies. With medium-length coats. Beaaaauuutiful!

I have two Tengai pups. I can affirm that I think he's great. I'll hopefully post some excerpts of the contract in a separate thread, but I'd like to get permission from Phil first.

I've met Kathi from Bali Hai as well as the Rodel folk and some other people. My advice would be to email them and attend a show. It's easy to do from NY and it's more useful to meet a bunch of breeders.

Edited to add: in addition to ny shiba rescue, there's also the ocean county shiba rescue (smaller but I think it's fairly active).
  • I know 3 people in the SF Bay Area who've gotten shibas from Bonnie Gibbons in Rhode Island. Her dogs are darling and typical shiba temperament. I'm sure Bonnie'd be willing to ship to NY...

  • @hondru I want one of those sooooooo bad! It's driving me insane right now.
  • I like Bali hai. There are a few football players that got their shibas from there too
  • I don't know why you mentioned football players, but it gave me the image of using a Shiba in place of a ball on field. Go long!
  • The animal planet Dogs 101 episode of shiba Inu covered a cream shiba who lived with a professional football player
  • I'm a bit late to this thread... I got my pup from Innisfree Kennels in NY state: http://innisfreekennels.com
    Great dogs, great folks there.
  • @shibamistress -- I have a 1-year-old shiba now, and when I was trying to find a breeder, I was SOOO close to going with RightPuppy because they were pretty close to where I lived at the time... ended up going with Frerose Kennel instead, great decision, awesome shiba. Anyway, your comment made me curious so I google'd it Right Puppy again, found this article: http://www.salisburypost.com/article/20130225/SP01/130229766/1024/SP0106
