Sanshu

edited April 2008 in Other Breeds

Does anyone have any info on the Sanshu dog? It's a rare Japanese breed, the most I've been able to find is a brief description and a few photos.

It had round eyes and a black mask.
The Mino had a fiery red coat, triangular eyes and thick ears with a
sickle tail. The Sanin was a bit

    SANSHU DOG

    Breeders developed
the Sanshu Dog about 1912 on Honshu, Japan's main island where all of
the major cities and population centers are located. They started by crossing
indigenous middle-sized Japanese dogs with the Chow Chow from China.

    The robust Sanshu
looks very much like a small Akita (or a large Shiba), but his tail tends
to curl more loosely over the back.

    He comes in
a wide range of attractive colors. Both varieties are popular as companion
dogs throughout Japan. Despite this, he has never achieved any official
    recognition.

thanks. do these dogs even exist outside of Japan? seems like it has no breeders at all.

None that I saw. It looks like it isn't a very sought after breed. Too much of a mix of too many other dogs. But I am sure with enough detective work you could find a breeder.

It looks as if it would have been crossed with a Shikoku then.

As that dog in the photo appears to resemble extremely closely to a Shikoku Ken, just tall, narrow and long.

Interesting. Sanshu, I like the name.

I thought the same, it looked like a taller and lankier Shikoku.

Holy Crap Corina! Where have you been???

I agree, when I first saw the pic of the Sanshu, it looked like a lean Shikoku.

    Side- Converstaion:

    Still going without internet...

...which has been a major bummer! When I do have a chance to go on, tis' not for very long. And I'm so overwhelmed with everything that I've missed. It makes it much more difficult to read (and reply) to all of them. Sorry =(^-^`)= I appolygize, one of these days I'll catch up, but I have no clue when I'll be able to get my internet back at home (it's easier at home then in an internet cafe or a friend's house). Maybe I'll just take it by the every few days when I can go on for a little while. I'll try and be on at least a couple of times per week. They'll be little comments here and there, I can't spam the forums anymore like I use to, lol.

It's feels great to be back here though. I miss all of you very much! I'll be giving you a call soon Romi. I sent you a text a few days ago, not sure if you got it though, ttyl.

I've never seen one outside of Japan.  In Japan, I saw a few dogs that looked like that. Some of my relatives thought that Stokes my chow mix looked like a Sanshu when they saw pictures of him. I looked into the Sanshu and they are extremely rare and aren't being pushed to be saved like the 6 or so nationally recognized breeds.

I confirm, it's a photo of Shikoku Ken.

I haven't got any photo of Sanshu, just the FCI's standard to.....

I think that is probaly a Shikoku-Ken from the deer hunting line, they tend to be taller than the boar hunting Shikoku-Ken (like Katja's).

And the picture looks (I would say, out of hunch) about 15-20 years old. A lot can happen to a breed in that amount of time to change the way it looks.
