Chain collar with name plate

edited May 2013 in Products & DIY
In Japan, male Japanese Akitas over a certain age (I think Soken class and up) are required to wear a chain along with the show collar. In LA Branch AKIHO, all adult class dogs are required to have a chain as backup. The chain worn in Japan is distinctive in that it has different type of links and an engraveable name plate.

There are lots of resources on this forum for buying or making the rolled leather collar and silk braided leash with tassel for showing Nihon Ken... but I haven't seen anything about the chain that goes with it. I asked a breeder in Japan while I was there, and he said to go to the Adachiya store for it, but they had no chains of any sort. The breeder of @jellyfish's Toki has one of these chains with a manufacturer mark from Tokyo on it, but couldn't remember where he got it from. I am hoping that @jellyfish will be able to get some good pictures of it for me, because its difficult to see the chain while its on a dog.

Anyway, here are some photos of dogs wearing these chains. They come in silver and gold, but I don't have any photographs of the silver version (Toki's breeder has the silver chain). Any help finding these for sale would be greatly appreciated. I wish for my chains to be as authentic as possible; I have been able to find similar chains in chrome from a European website, but its not the "real deal" as it were.

  • This is the closest I have found online but its not quite the same and not what I want. Although the website is in Japanese, ForDogTrainers is actually a New York company.

  • These are pretty neat.
  • The chain is badass looking.
I'm thinking you might have to have someone in Japan look for you.
I agree, you gotta go 100% authentic. The look-alike one is cheapy looking.
Saigo is the spitting image of Manjin Go, especially in the last photo.
  • Well, it may not be exactly what you're looking for, but it is pretty nice. If they had a limited slip one like that, I'd buy it. I like the "fur saver" type of links. We're having a hell of time finding a collar that doesn't break up Leo's fur, and I've gone on to metal, now, with little success.

Anyway, good luck with finding what you're looking for, too!

@shibamistress For ID tags I use a 5mm mountain rope collar.

This collar is designed for ID only and cannot be used with a leash. It is super lightweight, and vanishes under the fur causing no breakage or matting. I really like them. I put a full collar or slip lead on the dogs when I need to walk them, and don't have to worry about them not having ID should they get out of the house any other time.
  • I had one of those! I liked it, and apparently Leo did too. It was loose enough that he was able to get it off and chew it up. We had it two days. :( Then I went to a kangaroo leather one, which is actually decent (but I accidently got it too big, so I kept worrying he'd get it stuck on something). And then when I got a new one in his size, it's a chain martingale, but it's just regular chain and is causing more hair breakage.

Sigh. He's hard to fit for an ID collar. :(
  • I have been informed that the name of this chain is "akitainu-you hojo kusari" which means Akita auxillary chain. The kanji for it is 秋田犬用補助鎖. Maybe that will help someone in Japan find it for me? lol
  • @poeticdragon, I will check with my cousin in Japan & let you know...
  • That place is cool - check out the ancient reference :)

@TheWalrus Thank you for that link! I don't know why I didn't see that you found it before. How would I order from that place, do they ship overseas?

EDIT: Here's another one I found (also not gold):
    http://item.rakuten.co.jp/ks-tech/112700642/

Running it through google translate, it seems like the second website will do the engraving as part of the purchase. That's great! Especially since I want it engraved with kanji, and I'm not sure local business could handle it (at a reasonable price). I am not sure how to use their form and if they ship to US, however. Halp.

EDIT x2: Oh, hey, I found the English page:
    http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/ks-tech/item/112700642/

And here's another one, although not quite the same (but it does have gold):

  • I want some too!!!!!!!!
  • @poeticdragon that's actually the same company 'Okano Seisakusho'
They will engrave for you, and it looks like you could order through the English site. That last link to the gold chain looks like they don't have Akita sizes though.
