Dog Treats - Recipes!

I am working on compiling recipes for homemade dog treats - I really like to bakeSmile!   In doing so, I've found that there is a vast amount of recipes out there.  If any of you guys have recipes that you wouldn't mind sharing, please send them on or post.  I'll give you credit on the recipe header!

Jazz has a favorite made with natural peanut butter and I've tracked one down (that's baking now!) especially for Lucy that shouldn't have anything in there to aggravate her allergies.

Well, if they are Jazz approved, I know Lucy is going to go crazy for them. I bet you'll see a wave the likes of which you've never seen before. :-D

My friend MJ makes Liver Brownies for her dogs, dogs really go crazy for them.  Here is the recipe as written up by her:

Liver Brownies   325 oven  20-25 minutes baking time

1 pound of chicken livers pureed

    1 egg

    1 cup flour

    1/2 cup corn meal

    a shake of garlic powder

    a pinch of salt

Using a food processor puree the chicken
livers.  Add the rest of the ingredients and process.  It will be the
consistency of cookie dough.  Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper
and spread out the mixture.  Bake at 325 for 20 to 25 minutes.  Place
on a rack and cool.  Cut up with a pizza cutter and pack up in snack
bags and freeze.  Keep frozen until needed.

    Variations:

Can use beef liver, but then you have to cut it up in pieces before processing.

Instead of using liver you can use canned salmon, tuna or sardines.  My dogs like the salmon the best.

Venison liver works also, but I worry about CWD.

A friend with a much larger dog bakes her dough in muffin tins.  She found that a 1/2 muffin works best with her dog.

You could spread the mixture over a well greased cookie sheet, but clean up will be ugly.  Parchment paper is so much easier.

You can use fresh garlic, but then you will
have to open every window in your house because you will gas yourself
    out of your house.

    Wheat-Free Salmon Treats Recipe

    1 can flaked salmon
    (undrained)

    1 cup oatmeal

1 cup yellow cornmeal (i use polenta, although i'm not sure if its the best or not)

    1/4 teaspoon baking powder

    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

    1/3 cup water

    Preheat oven to
    350°F

    In a blender or
food processor, combine oatmmeal, salmon, and water, and blend
until well blended. Remove, and knead until it is a soft dough.

    On a lightly floured
surface, roll to 1/4" thickness and cut into shapes**.Place
on a non-stick or lightly greased cookie sheet and bake for
20 to 30 minutes, watching for burning. Remove and cool.

    Ingredients

    1 cup chicken broth

    ½ cup rice

    4 slices turkey bacon

    2 large eggs, beaten

    ½ cup bread crumbs

    Salt and pepper

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)

    Sour cream (people’s portions only)

    Salsa (people’s portions only)

    Directions

In a medium saucepan, bring the chicken broth
to a boil over high heat. Add the rice, lower the heat and simmer until
tender, about 15 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl and let cool.

While the rice is cooking, in a medium nonstick skillet, cook the
bacon over medium-high heat until crisp, about 5 minutes; drain on
paper towels. Finely chop the bacon and add to the cooled rice. Reserve
    the skillet.

Mix the egg and bread crumbs into the rice mixture; season with salt and pepper. Shape into 4 equal-size patties.

In the reserved skillet, heat the EVOO, 2 turns of the pan, over
medium heat. Add the rice cakes and cook for 4 minutes on each side.
Let cool for 10 minutes before serving to your pup. Top the people’s
portions with sour cream and salsa.

    Thanks :D

Tis funny, I'm a decent cook. Especially if I follow a recipe it comes out perfectly. I'm great at baking things. But every single thing I have baked, cooked, fried, made, etc since being with Errik has been overcooked, undercooked, just came out wrong for no reason. I've been cooking my whole life and all of a sudden I suck. He's a curse!!!!! Thank god he's the regular cook in the family.

  • edited November -1
Subconsciously, you are sabotaging your cooking to let Errik do all the cooking
  • edited November -1
Haha I wish it were true. It's more like Errik is a good cook so I feel the need to prove myself to him. It hurts my pride when I cook something and mess up. Maybe I'm putting too much pressure on myself without realizing and making me goof up.

That could be it - I dated a chef once and I couldn't cook a decent dish for him the entire time we dated Frown, the minute we broke up, the kitchen god smiled upon me!

    EDIT:btw that was not a suggestion ;-)

  • edited November -1
Hahaha I'm sorry Errik, we can't date anymore because LJ told me to :P

This is the recipe that I played with to create the treats for Lucy.  Basically it was taking the egg/milk out and using tomato juice as a substitue because they have about the same viscosity.

    Lucy's Treats

1/4 cup hot water (can flavor with meat drippings or use broth)

    1 package dry yeast
    1 teaspoon sugar

    1 1/2 cups tomato juice
    2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups wheat germ                                         1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

Preheat your oven to 300°F, then pour the water (or broth) into a large bowl. Add the sugar and yeast and let stand for about 5 minutes.  Add the tomato juice, 1 cup all-purpose flour and the wheat germ. Stir with a large spoon to form a smooth batter. Then stir in the remaining all-purpose and whole wheat flours (this will make the dough very dry and stiff). You'll probably have to use your hands to finish mixing.  Sprinkle flour on your cutting board, then take a couple of handfuls of dough out and work into a small ball shape. Then, with a rolling pin flatten the balls to about 1/4 " thick on the cutting board. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. Use a cookie cutter to cut out your treat shapes.   Then repeat the whole process again with the rest of the dough, working a few handfuls at a time. Finally, use a spatula to put your people biscuits onto a cookie sheet. Then bake at 300°F for about an hour. Allow to dry in the oven for several hours.

Thanks LJ! I've got enough left over to last us a while, but I'll have to give this a try when we run out. :-)

I mix yogurt and cream cheese for the frosting.  You can find pictures of them in the Nemo thread.

    PupCakes -

    Ingredients:

1/2 cup high quality dry dog food kibble

1 7-ounce package Jiffy Bueberry Muffin mix

1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

    2 large eggs

    2/3 cup evaporated lowfat milk

    1.  Preheat the oven to 350

    2.  Put the dog food kibble in a food processor or blender and grind to a course flour.  Measure 1/2 cup after grinding.

    3.  In a large bowl combine ground kibble and the remaning ingredients until mized well.  Should be like grainy cake batter,.

    4. Use paper baking cups (they are more likely to pass without incident if your dog eats one versus the metal ones) and fill each to 12 to 2/3 full.

    5.  Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.

    6.  Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.  Store in an air-tight container.

    7.  Finish with a thin layer of whipped cream cheese (I added a smidge of yogurt in mine too) frosting and sprinkle with dog food or colorful treat crumbs.

This recipe is in the Shiba Scream, 3rd edition (nycshibarescue.org)

    PB Oatmeal Cookies

    1/2 cup water

    1/4 cup vegetable oil

    1/4 cup honey

1/2 cup all natural chunky peanut butter, no salt or sugar added

    1 tsp pure vanilla extract

    1 egg

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

    3/4 cup quick-cooking oats, uncooked

(*I personally add a handful of carob chips because my dogs love them!- Kelly)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all of the ingredients together in a
large bowl. Drop small spoonfuls of dough onto a baking sheet about one
inch apart. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 to 20 minutes. The cookies
are done when they are firm to the touch. For extra crunchy cookies,
leave the cookies to harden in the oven for about 1 to 2 hours. Because
there are no preservatives in this recipe, the cookies must be stored
in an air-tight container and kept in the fridge. This recipe will
    yield about 40 cookies.

I wasn't really sure where to add this, but be careful not to add these ingredients to anything your dog will be eating!

    "You
are probably already aware that your Shiba -or any dog for that matter-
cannot share in your love of chocolate nor can they indulge in your coffee habit. But did you know that avocados, grapes, raisins and
macadamia nuts are also dangerous? There are many dangers that our best
friends should be kept from ingesting; yet, many of us are unaware of
what is and what isn’t safe for dogs to ingest or even taste. Millions
of dogs are hospitalized yearly due to

accidental poisoning, but these possibly deadly encounters can be
prevented. Always be aware of your dog’s surroundings and be sure to
    educate others about possible doggie

dangers. Never let your dog lick, eat or chew anything that you are
unsure of. If you think that your dog has consumed a potentially
poisonous treat, plant or object, please contact a

veterinarian or call a poison control center immediately. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!"
