Kiba!!

Hi everyone!  It's been a while since we last posted so I just wanted to give you guys an update on our little puppy.  We were worried for a little bit that he wasn't growing enough, but after reading the ther posts on the forum, it looks like he's on track with the rest of the litter.  33.5 lbs as of 4/5/08.  Hope Sora and Kuma (AND all the other doggies!) are doing well!

How old is Kiba?  Tenji is full grown at 19 months and he weighs 36 pounds.  Is Kiba food motivated?  Tenji will go two days without eating.  He is the least food motivated dog that I have ever known.  Oops....exception....CAT FOOD...he will eat Sassy's anytime he can get to itTongue out

Kiba is right around 6 months now.  We thought he would be a lot bigger by now... but I guess we'll have to wait and see.  Peggy seems to think he'll get to about 40 lbs.  He's pretty food motivated, but sometimes it was really hard to get him to eat.  There were days when he would only eat a cup...I figure a puppy his size should be eating at least 2-3 cups a day.  Anyways...we switched him off Orijen puppy to Orijen fish ( I actually caled to Orijen nutritionist to make sure it had the right nutrients for a puppy) and he loves it!  We can now get him to finish about a 1.5 cups in one sitting.  Another food he really liked was Great Life, although we switched to Orijen cuz we liked the ingredients more.

Wow Shan! You've been gone for a while!  i think the last time you posted was from Kiba's neuter.  Those pics were awesome btw.  Im glad that he got through that hurdle and is doing well now!  He is a cutie!  Thanks for the update and pix!

It's weird how different the coloring makes he and Sora look (at first). But the face structure is definitely similar. His coat looks so soft! He's probably about 7 lbs heavier than Sora, but he doesn't look like it - maybe if they were next to each other. Don't you live in CA? We recently moved out here - we should meet up sometime! Sora has always eaten pretty well. She eats about 2 cups of innova puppy a day (wetted down), plus some pumpkin the past few weeks to keep her regular.

    He's definitely gorgeous though!

Kiba looks great! He looks like he loves his ball too (so does Kuma!). I will have to take some new photos of him soon. Kuma weighs about 30 lbs or so right now.

Kuma isn't a big eater either, but he is food motivated at home for good treats (usually during training), but not away at all (too distracted for eating I guess).

What a beautiful face! And I love that wonderful bushy white tail.

Kiba says thanks for the nice comments :)

Yah...kiba loves his treats...but when it comes to mealtime...he's so picky and rarely finishes his bowl in one sitting. He's like his bro Kuma and gets easily disctracted too. But i'm glad to hear that he is growth seems to be in line with his siblings. We were worried for a minute...even though he feels like he weighs 34 pounds...he looks like 25.

Romi - it's glad to be back :) ...work was kicking my a$$ for a while there. i was sitting in front of a computer for 10 hours a day...and by the time i got home...i wouldn't even want to look at my laptop...haha.

Tommy & Jen - where in california are you guys? Drew and I are in the bay area...if you guys are around here...we should totally meet up!! i would love to see how Sora and Kiba interact! She's so pretty btw...and even though they are completely different colors...Sora, Kuma and kiba really do look similar in the face.

    :D shan

Tommy & Jen, and Kris & Dan (or anyone?)-

Just wondering...but do Kuma or Sora have a weird twitch in their legs? Whenever Kiba is lying down to rest, he does this weird kicking motion with his back legs...like a horse kicking something. He even does it sometimes when he is standing up. I thought it was b/c he was ticklish on his paws...but he does it almost everytime he is lying down, even when there is nothing close to his paws. It's really weird and i thought it would go away by now. Nothing else seems to be wrong with his legs. I dunno what it could be but he's done it since we got him...hmmm...is this a cause for concern?

Sora doesn't twitch - I don't think she even really twitches when she sleeps. We live in Lompoc - near Santa Maria. We have a friend moving to San Jose, so we'll be up in that area quite a few times. The twitching while sleeping isn't unusual, but I don't know about the twitching while standing up.

Its interesting how the primitive head shape of the Shikoku is so much more noticeable on a cream/white Shikoku.

    ----

Ahi has always kicked her legs out every now and then (kinda like a twitch), Loa doesn't seem to do this very much... Maui, our Shiba does it too.

I have no idea if this is related or not (and I hope it isn't), but Lucy's vet has always asked me to keep an eye out for her kicking her back leg out to the side. If your dog has LP, it can be a sign they are trying to put the knee cap back into position. This is not intended to make you worry, but I felt I should mention it.

That (what Dave wrote) sounds like what Ahi used to do.

Shan, Kuma doesn't kick out either when he sleeps or stands. Not certain if it is anything to worry about?

We (my husband and I) have decided that Kuma is very flexible in his back as he can sleep in the strangest, mot twisted positions (usually lying on his back). Do Kiba and Sora do that?

Thanks for your guys' comments, i think i'll have to ask our vet about this twitch....i thought it could be a puppy thing...but i don't think so anymore. Shinobi has LP too but he doesn't ever kick out like Kiba does...he does a strange hopping on his back leg when he's runs too hard....but the vet said it's not too bad right now. Boo on LP...

Brad - I could have missed this post, but how did you find out that Ahi needed surgery for her LP? btw...glad to hear she's doing better!

Kris/Dan - Kiba is a pretty floppy pup...but he always sleeps on his stomach or side. He doesn't mind being on his back though...shinobi literally freaks out when i try to push him on his back...it's kind of funny.

Tommy/Jen - oh! we are only about 25 minutes from San Jose :) how awesome would it be for Sora and Kiba to meet again!! Let us know when you're in town!

She limped, she has limped since she was about 9 months old, randomly. We had her knees and hip x-rayed several times but none of the vets ever felt there was an issue. We we moved here her limp just kept getting worse, probably due to her getting a lot more exercise time. When it got to the point that her limp was almost all the time we just figured there had to be something wrong - went a local vet and they told us to go to a specialist.

Thanks Brad! I remember that post now. I think i'm going to have Kiba checked out at the vet for this. It's so odd. Sometimes he'll be lying down next to me and start kicking really hard...i can't help but laugh...but it's definitely not normal.
