He heard my neighbor's Monster Cow for the first time.

Big booty. He likes to stand with his front end out the dog door and his back end in.
  • Congratulations! Arashi is super super cute (saying super twice makes it even more true)! Apparently I need to meet me a Kai because they are super cool. lol

I love Arashi's funny face he makes. So adorable. :)

Arashi is always wiggling around trying to get attention.

    image
There's a big pile of sticks I need to burn that Arashi feels the need to munch on.

    image

    image
    I squeaked at him.

He loves to play with Katana, who is usually pretty good about toning things down to puppy-level but can on occasion get a bit overwhelming.
Arashi is getting more confident with Conker, they played a bit today, but the rowdy Shiba is still intimidating. I do think it's the noise, since Conker and Katana play exactly the same, but Conker is a hellova lot louder/barky/growly than Katana.

Arashi is still not fond of the Canidae, he won't eat his breakfast and only part of dinner (even when soaked in raw milk and egg) so I got him some more EVO (turkey & chicken), which he loved. Brat.

He's showed a bit of resource guarding of objects like toys, chews, and sticks. This is a problem with Conker so I am going to keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't develop further.
  • Very cute! What is it with the stick chewing? Hanzo's even started digging in the yard for old roots to munch on. I've stopped letting him bring them inside to discourage the behavior, but he's always picking up random sticks and bits of wood whenever we're out an about.
  • @tmd He's about four months old and still has puppy teeth. I imagine he's teething now, which is when pups tend to do a lot of chewing. Plus, sticks are just fun to chew on, all my dogs will chew on sticks. I don't really like it when they bring sticks inside since it makes a mess, but outside is okay with me. I let them pick up sticks on hikes as long as they don't take me out at the knee with it.
  • Arashi played fetch with The Gang for the first time today. We do this every day, and he was NOT happy when left inside the fence the last few days so I brought him out to see how he'd do.
He wasn't overly interested in the ball, but has a blast running around with the other dogs and exploring the area. I like how comfortable he is here, i hope he's this comfortable in the woods on a hike (we'll see tomorrow.)

    image
He tried really hard to keep up with the other dogs.

    image
But was usually a bit late to the party.

    image
He collided with Katana's butt a second later.

    image
I love his tail and big booty.

    image
He has no issues getting his feet wet.

    image
Wearing Conker's RuffWear harness. He didn't even notice it was on, which is a really good thing since my dogs wear harnesses a lot.

    image
    I like this shot.

I cut the game short since I didn't want to stress Arashi's leg too much. We usually play fetch (and general exploring) for close to an hour, and I felt like that was a bit much for hard running this soon after his elbow's healed. We were only out for about 20 minutes today.
  • He is looking good!!!
  • Love the pics the colliding one sounds funny. :)
  • Arashi went on his first hike with Conker and I today. he was a bit nervous at first but quickly got into the hiking groove. Conker helped show him how it's done with lots of sniffing and pissing on things.

    image
    Let's go explore!

    image

    image
One of several small waterfalls in the first half of this trail.

    image

    image
There's people up there... Can we go around?

    image
    Rush away from the people!

We're going to have to work on that stranger fear thing, but not right now. In a short bit after he's had a little more time to settle in here we'll start working on it.
Arashi is doing really well with the other dogs. Conker is still a tad intimidating, but they played a lot yesterday. He adores Katana and gets upset if I put Katana away. He hasn't figured out that Juneau and Sasha don't play yet, he keeps trying to get them to play but they just blow him off.
He only barks when I leave and come home, hasn't barked at anything else yet. He loses it and screambarks when I go to work (yay...) and regular barks when I come back. I haven't set up the security camera to watch him yet but I will soon to see what he does in his crate while I'm at work.
  • He always hated when I left for work. He would usually just sleep while I was gone. The stranger thing just started right before he left here. Not sure where that came from.
  • Aww, Arashi looks so great! I think a kai always looks best on the trail!

That's neat Arashi gets to run around in a such a large area. Hanzo gets out and about off-leash, but I can't trust the other two out in the open and our fenced-in area is smaller than I'd eventually like it. Still, they get a bit of a zoom going, just in smaller circles ;)

On the topic of sticks, Hanzo really loves them and I love that he does. It's hilarious to see him try to drag a whole fallen branch around. It's just different than my other two. They seem not at all interested in sticks.
  • I've had Arashi for two weeks now. He seems to have fully integrated into The Gang. He plays with Conker now, not too often but he's more confident with him. He still loves Katana, and usually ignores Juneau and Sasha unless they are doing something interesting (they are generally boring dogs).

He's still afraid of strange people, and does not like to go places. Conker was the exact same way, but he never really got used to it, and still does not like strangers and new places (buildings especially). I hope Arashi doesn't take after him...

    Anyways...

    image
I took out a wall and gutted this room and turned it into a crate tower for the boys. Arashi wasn't overly fond of this crate at first, but now he likes it and asks to go inside so he can play with his toys. (I keep it shut 'cause the other dogs will go in there and steal his stuff.)

    image
Here you can see the shaved spot on his shoulder well. The fur is growing back now.

    image
I call this his "good side" since there is more visible brindle, and the fur wasn't shaved. We'll see how the brindle on the other side looks when the fur has fully grown back.

    image
This old bike tire is Katana's favorite toy, but he'll share it with Arashi.

    image
I took Katana and Arashi on a hike at my favorite trail system.

    image
These red flowers are some of the first to appear.

    image
The silly boys have pretty good recall!

    image
Arashi stuck pretty close, he ventured out a bit but only when Katana was way off. He s\tayed right beside or directly in front of me most of the time.

    image

    image

    image
He's none too fond of riding in the Jeep.

    image

    image
I took him with me to town today (laundry day) and walked him around some of the backroads (no people). He thought that walking down the middle of the lane was a good idea...

    image
    Hi puppy!
  • I love his face!
  • Aww! I am so glad that he is settling in well with you and your pups. :)

And wow! Those are some buttery smooth trails! Looks like it would be some fast mountain biking out there... Up for a visitor?!
  • @sunyata One of this system's multiple uses is mountain biking. The trails are AWESOME! There's everything from flat to insane hills, so you can tweak your hike or ride however you'd like.
You can come visit anytime :)
  • Love the picture of Arashi and Katana chewing on the tire. ;) And the hiking pictures are great, too. Is having Arashi drag a short leash easier than using a long line? I usually put Meitou on a long line when out hiking which is nice, but does have some drawbacks. I'm too worried he'll get too far away to harass other dogs or hikers to only use a regular leash. ;)
  • I haven't decided yet. I've used a longline and having him drag a regular leash, but I need to use both a few more times to get a better idea. He tends to stick very close, and weaves around my legs, so I think a regular leash will probably be better for him. I get super tangled in a longline when a dog does that...
  • Yeah, sometimes I have to do the Long Line Dance (hoping over it or spinning around to untangle myself). And I have had it cut into my hands a few times pretty badly last year so now I usually just let him drag it or attach it to a belt or fanny pack. But it certainly is useful. Maybe I'll try a shorter leash on Meitou in a few places where there aren't many other people or dogs to see how he does.
  • Arashi looks so great! With Katana, especially in the crate and tire picture, it's like they are yin and yang!
  • I decided to rename Arashi. It's a good name but after using it for a bit I wasn't feeling it, so I went with a different one. I wanted something birdy, since his behavior reminds me of birds, and he has a decent attraction to them. I had a few I've been trying out for several weeks to see which fit best; Crow, Tyto, or Falcon. I went with Tyto, which is my favorite genus of owl.
Now I just need to pick a registered name for the little guy.

    image
I'm always trying to get good pictures of his brindle. It's tough to do!

    image
Tough to see here, but if you look *really* hard, you can see some Urajiro!

    image

    image
I was attempting to play fetch with the Gang, but this little thief would try to steal the toy every chance he got.

    image

    image

    image

    image
    He's got a strong rear-end.

    image
I really like his build so far. He's athletic, yet sturdy. I hope he looks this good as an adult!

    image
His black is dark and his brindle a deep red, but he has an overall rich mahogany hue, it's pretty cool.

    image

    image
    Glowing Brindle
  • He is maturing so handsomely! Maybe for registered name Bird of Prey (since Kai have such a high prey drive) or something along the lines of child of the night what with the barn owls and all
  • I love the new name! :) He is getting more and more handsome!
  • He looks very much like a Ritsu pup! He looks a lot like Mika. I can see what they both got from their father. :-)

    How do you pronounce Tyto?
  • Tie-Toe, two distinct syllables, strong T's.

He does look a lot like Ritsu! I can see some Tora in him, but it's mostly Ritsu at this point.
