Kishu on Craigslist

I was researching a few things about the shikoku the other night and happened across an ad for a Kishu puppy on craigslist. Apparently the woman who has the dog got her from a co-worker who had purchased her from a breeder. The co-worker I guess couldn't care for her so she gave her to the woman who has her now who is struggling with the pup. Its supposedly a 3 month old female kishu ken. I inquired about the pups papers but apparently they somehow got lost going through so many different hands. And the woman has never had a pedigree dog before so papers weren't even a thought for her.

I'm only aware of 1 Kishu breeder in the US and that's Carleen...and she said she didn't have any pups recently.

Here's the link:

She sent me pics of what she was told is is the dad. This is them:

I doubt that its really a kishu but what do you guys think? I'm really curious as to who is trying to sell people 'kishu' pups that aren't really kishu's.

Looks like a cream Shiba or American-style Kai Ken to me. Way too small to be a Kishu I think. Puppy looks more Akita-like... who knows what the mother is??
  • She said the puppy is about 15-20 lbs..I think thats too big for a shiba but idk.

I'm very curious about the dog lol
  • Looks like a Shiba!
  • So the woman gets a free dog, and wants to make money off it because it's "rare"?? Ugg..

Without papers, that claim is worthless.
  • That's not a puppy... It's a shiba.
  • Idk if she paid for it or not but regardless I agree. Would a 3 month old shiba weigh 15 lbs? I'm not familiar with shibas so idk..but the dad does resemble a shiba.

@Hinata23 - there's pics of the puppy in the link. I'm just too lazy to post them lol
  • The pup is too big to be a (full) shiba
  • Looks like a Spitz mix of some sort, Shiba or Jindo?. Doesn't look very Kishu to me. Dad looks like an off-standard Shiba/Shiba mix.

The dad does look like a skinny cream shiba, but the puppy itself does not look like one. Between the face shape and the ears, and just the body build it just doesn't look like a purebred three month old shiba (or kishu from my extremely limited knowledge of them). I could see it being a nihon ken mix. Maybe a puppy miller trying to cash in on the rare breeds branding originally sold the pup?

    [edited for a typo]
  • If the pup was older might be able to tell more..or if there was a pic of the mother.
    Who knows.

She told me if she doesn't find a home for her then she's taking her to the SPCA.th
  • @Dragonfly, can you point her toward a shiba rescue, or point a rescue to her?

DC Shiba Inu Rescue and NYC Shiba Rescue would be the closest big ones. Shiba Inu Rescue of Ocean County would be another smaller rescue, somewhat near the area. Depending on if the pup goes to a rescue and which one, I may be able to remotely help arrange for at least certain legs of the transport.

    http://nycshibarescue.org

    http://www.shibarescuenj.org

All three are excellent rescue organizations.

[edited to add the correct link for NYCSR]

Edited to also add - the Shiba Rescue of Ocean County might actually be fairly close. They are the smallest though.
  • The paws don't like Shiba paws at all! (It has weird toes, the kinds that kind of freak me out to look at), and there is something rangy/angular about the dog that doesn't make me think it is even all Shiba. (Even my puppy mill Shiba girl had nice, tighter feet, not odd GSD style toes like that). I don't think the ears look right either, not even for a mill type Shiba.

So whatever it is, I suspect it's some sort of spitz mix. Maybe with Shiba in there, but not Shiba. And probably really not Kishu.
  • Oh god, @shibamistress, I have a thing about small dog toes / hare feet... WHY did you point it out. :(
  • I don't think that's hare foot, as the standing pic looks more like cat foot. I think the odd look is more from the extra long nails, poor thing probably feels uncomfortable walking :(
  • I'll try and point her in a good direction. If she was just a tad closer then I could meet her and at least take the pup and make sure it went somewhere safe, before she sends it off to who knows where. From the sounds of it she seemed like she'd be taking her in the next day or so and I sort of doubt that she would take the time to arrange something with a rescue..she seemed to be at wits end with the dog and desperate.

    Idk what to do now...
  • @Dragonfly, what about seeing if she's willing to meet you halfway? She may be willing to put in the drive time if it means not sending the pup to its death. Though at that age, the pup does have a good chance of being adopted.
  • Oh god, @shibamistress, I have a thing about small dog toes / hare feet... WHY did you point it out. :(
ha! I think I got it from you! You pointed it out once, and then I started looking at dog feet and realized I also was freaked out by those kind of feet! *lol* GSDs are really bad! (We used to call my friend's dog "pencil toes" because of his long toes!)

And I do think it's a weird foot issue....even when my Shibes had extra long nails, their feet were tighter/neater, and Bel was a mill girl and far from perfect!
  • Oh gosh, now I'm noticing the feet too! I think it's just that the two middle toes are significantly longer than the outer ones? And don't seem very curved...

Now I'm going to start noticing dog feet too...

Dad looks a lot like the American Eskimo/Chow mix a friend of mine has, except with a short coat and different earset (my friend's dog has very Chow ears). Maybe Eskie/Shiba?

I could see even some kind of shepherd or cattle dog and shiba
  • Hmm..well I forwarded her some info today and she told me that she had sold her. I'd be pretty mad if I were the new puppies owner. $800 is a lot to spend on a mix of who knows what from who knows where...but hopefully its a good home!
  • Maybe they will try to research info on the breed and find this forum
