14months report

edited May 2010 in Akita (秋田犬)
Hello, I'v ben inactive for a while now. Last time i posted aki was 6 months old, now hes 14 :D
Heres the 1st topic: http://www.nihonken.org/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=4881&page=1#Item_32

So... Hes 24kg, and thats really confusing for me because i thought that their lower limit is 35kg. Hes fur is much better. Hes joyfull, alltho he acts like a badass when hes around other dogs (just standing there like hes guarding others ^^ ).
Anyways i wanted to hear what you think about the weight problem.
Hes mostly eating granules (30% protein 16% fat) about 200-300g a day.
Here are some pics taken from a n95:

Could it be that he'll just end up being a small dog?

Are you feeling his ribs and spine through his fur?

maybe hes just going to stay small. he is gorgeous tho :)

@ayk Yes, i can feel hes bones. Altho the vet says that hes not skinny...
Btw. from what age can i start giving him 1 meal a day?

Also hes left eye waters almost all the time, what could be causing this? Hes fur turned little red at the eye area(cuz of the water ofc).

He doesn't look too thin in the pics. Might be able to put on a little bit more weight though.

When it comes to living animals, there really aren't many hard fast rules. If he's gonna grow, he will. If your vet feels fine about his weight, just keep him going at that amount of food.

My Kishu male is smaller than most of his litter mates. I worried about it at first, but now I'm just leaving it up to mother nature.

If it's only one eye affected, could it be entropion?

Couple questions - First is your Akita a Full Japanese Akita? If so they are know to grow much much slower than an American Akita. In some cases 2.5 to 3 years is not uncommon.

    Here is an example:

    image
In this photo Kita who at the time was 2.5 years old... was 28.4kg.

Kaeda (female JA) who was at the vet in March just shy of 14months was 21kg. I feed her twice a day 2 cups of Arcana dry food + 1/2 cup of plain yogurt every other day. From 14months to now (17months) has started to fill out.

Thanks for the reply's. Yes my aki is a male JA. I didnt know that they grow 3 years.
So... is it okey to start giving him 1 bigger meal instead of multiple meals?

It is ideal to feed a dog 2x a day. Much easier on the dogs body and metabolism.

I go meals twice a day. Works for her and works for me.

Hey guys, i noticed my dog has quite dirty teeth. How can i clean them (i tryed using the burst but its nearly imposible and i made aki bleed a bit, i guess hes skin is sensitive)?
  • edited November -1
I use a brush, the first time her gums bled. After that it's been no issue.

but aki still doesent have grown teeth so i brush the gums more then the teeth

Maymay's teeth were horrid when I got her. Eow all brown and nasty nasty. The first few times I brushed her teeth, she bled. Make sure that you are using a soft toothbrush.

Brushing teeth is great, but giving raw bones and chews like bully sticks, tracheas (which do have fat on them so make sure you exercise a lot if you are using these), and tendons will also clean teeth. I think raw bones the most.

I go to a local Butcher and get them to cut a cow femur into two inch thick pieces. The joint gets cut into fours. I give these to the dogs about twice a week and I think this alone keeps their teeth clean. But I do brush as well.

I also have a rope toy that helps with Kaeda's teeth. Its funny but now Kaeda likes getting her teeth brushed.

Should i ask some family to take care of him, take him to a shelter, leash him at my grandmas leash or what. Im living in a apartment so he needs to get out atleast 2 times per day. Any suggestion would be apreciated. ty
