Eating Soil

Lately I've noticed my shiba eating the soil out of my potted plants outside. He'll also dig and take a few bites out of the hole.

People have told me its probably a mineral deficiency or he's just hungry. I feed him a mix of Orijen red meat kibble and Innova. Both are pretty good quality dog food. should I be supplementing with minerals??? I also doubt he's doing it because he's hungry... I feed him generous amounts of food both in the morning and at night, plus all the snacks throughout the day.

Did you plant any seeds lately? I know the dogs at the dogpark all started eating the dirt when they seeded for new growth.

    Is he an older shiba?

No seeds planted and he is 1 yr 2 months....
  • Maybe he sees some bugs squirming around in there & is trying to "hunt" them? ~
  • I recently read that some dogs, especially dogs with a high prey-drive will instinctively dig as a alternative food source. I've seen him nibble on a earthworm before so I wouldn't be surprised. for now I just have to 'tolerate' the holes in my lawn!
