  • lol, that last picture is cute!
  • Kaeda looks so sweet in those photos!!
  • She is so gorgeous! Love her expression :D She seems to me a little slim though, do you think she will fill out?
  • edited December 2010
She is on the slim side. Some JA take up to three years to fully grow. Most of it seems to happen between year 2 and 3. Kaeda's growth has really picked up from 18 months on.

Her size is also very deceptive. She is just a hair taller than her mother and is at 60 lbs right now. Kita in the photo I posted with the LC puppies was at 65lbs. If she is standing, you can she how much she has filled in compared to older photos.

Plus we walk and go on bike rides a fair amount.
  • Just to give out an idea on size vs the camera perspective. Please excuse the bad lighting and poor composition.

Even though she has skinny legs you can see there is some bulk coming into the body. I left the window sill, door knob, and box in to help as reference points.

While her heard isn't filled in yet it is getting bigger. You can see that in these photos her body looks much much thicker than in the others.

You also need to remember that the FCI, JKC, and Akiho standards are still un-updated. They all have the heights way way too high. In fact, most of the females out of Japan right now would come in at the bottom part of the standard. For females - they say 24-26 with a plus or minus 1-1.5" The reality over there is 22-24 for females and 24-26 for males. For example Waka who is a big female is around 24" at the withers. Kaeda and her mom are coming in at 22.5-23" depending on the day. However Kaeda from floor to the top of her head (excluding ears) is 29" and she is 32" long. Also the standard issue is something that is slowly being changed in Japan.

I think I'll put together a before and after photo post of some of our club dogs showing how the mature. From 1.5 years to 3 is unreal. Hope this helps and puts everything in perspective.

  • Hahaha, Festivus! I think she is simply beautiful.

  • She's so gorgeous! Looks like she's enjoying the snow, too!

(I just showed the pics to my husband, who prefers the AAs, and he said, hmmm...I have to admit that is a good looking dog!" So Kaeda is even convincing him! )
  • Kaeda pics always take my breath away. She is such a beaut!!!! Looks like a lot of fun too. I'm jealous of the snow. It's so wet/rainy here. I can't stand it and neither can the dogs.

  • Gorgeous! And yeah, those eyes are brilliant.
  • What a great looking dog! Such calm dignity and presence.
  • WOW absolutely gorgeous. I am in love with that coat, the colours really come out in that 2nd last pic
  • She looks great Sean!
  • Oh man, she's gorgeous! The colors and her eyes, amazing looking dog.
  • She is looking great! :) Thanks for the update!
  • Her head is filling out nicely. :-) She has her mother's eye color?

    How big is she now?
  • Wow! She is looking really good!
  • She does have Ayame's eyes. I'll know more at her checkup in a few weeks. Without a doubt she is on the smaller size, but I'm happy with her overall look. In a perfect world I would like a little more meat on her. My guess is that she'll thicken up after her first litter this fall.

Thank you all for the kind comments
  • Have you decided on a sire for Kaeda?
  • I think I'm going to go with Kita. He's easy to deal with and has a nice coat. Kaeda has no relation to him so it's an easy match. For her second litter I'll have a lot more options.
  • Kita is gorgeous! I remember seeing him at Ben's! :) You are going to produce such beautiful JAs!
