Super cool Shiba

edited July 2011 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
I stumbled across this artcle this afternoon on a Shiba competing in a Police Dog competition. The Shiba, a 11Kg, 5 year old male competed in the Okayama Pref. PoliceDog competition. Now the K9 tests are not so much about the use of bite training but mostly SAR, agility, and searching (narc, missing persons). This is pretty darn cool especially when the Shiba has to compete with GSD's, Labs, and Malenois. Cant find a english article but here's the link in Japanese.

  • Sweet man! That's really cool. :-)
  • Awesome! Thanks for sharing. :)
  • Thanks for the link very cool indeed.
  • How did the Shiba fare in the competition?

The two Jindos with the LAPD were dropped from their program. One obviously didn't make the cut and the other would do the scentwork for the handler by 12 weeks of age, but he didn't have his heart into it. http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_18051454

  • This is pretty cool!

I tried Google translator, which gave me the oddest translation ever.
  • Really cool!
  • Nice! If I'm not wrong but didn't they also train Kais to be war dogs in Japan? But it didn't work because they were "one man's dog".

  • Kai were trained for the Japanese military in place of GSD's during or around WW2. As the story goes they had more stamina, and learned tasks faster than the other breeds being used at the time.

The problem was once their training was completed and they were moved to a new facility away from their trainers, within the first night they had all escaped and were never seen again.

It is easy for people to draw their own conclusions as to why this happened. I look at it as an interesting anecdote.
  • She did pass the test and she is now officially a proud police dog from Okayama pref, Poice Dept.

  • Cool article!

@ayk I heard about the jindos. That's too bad.

About Kais I can totally believe it. Take them from their owners and game on. You've got one wild dog. Koda knew his handler two days after he got here. She spent a lot of time with him while I was at work pre-training and just bonding with him. She became family right off the bat.
