Well, I ordered it and just made a note to please make sure it was actually the Palisades pack and that they hadn't confused it with the Approach pack. We'll see what happens!
if purchasing from cabelas, the palisades pack should come with 2 hydration packs and its on sale for $70. i think people must come in and steal things from them since i did notice that some of them only had one. the employees probably do not know that there is a difference between the palisades and the approach pack. from what i remember, the approach packs were not on sale and are at regular pricing. looks like it might be better to purchase from ultrapaws unless u stumble upon a complete palisades at cabelas.
ive got a question: is it okay to pick the dog up like a bag by using the handle on top of the harness? (perhaps to lift him over something or to weigh him)
@jikjak: Yes, it's okay to lift the dog by the handle because the harnesses have an elaborate support system to do just that. In situations where you are hiking and you need to lift your dog to a higher elevation than they can get to for themselves, that's what that handle on their back is for.
Last summer I took Sosuke out on some lakes with the webmaster harness on (which is the base of the palisades and approach packs) specifically so I could lift him out of the water. He likes to swim, so of course, when we take him out in our paddle boat or my sister's motor boat, he jumps out and goes for a swim sometimes. No problems lifting him out, though, and he doesn't mind it at all!
Yeah, I use Conker's harness to pick him up all the time. Really comes in handy when I have to grab him if he's pestering something since I don't have to worry about grabbing a collar and hurting him. He also has to be shown how to jump over everything, so I use it for that too.
My Palisades has two hydration bags, and I guess Cabelas must not want to carry that pack anymore since you normally only see those kinds of sales if they are clearing something out.
I bought the Palisades pack tonight at the Cabelas in Hamburg PA.
Thanks to the notations about the change in sizing, I decided to purchase a M, which was perfect. It fits Kuma, my shikoku, very well and he is 21.5 in tall and about 37 lbs. The small would have been too tight on him, but might have fit Sachi, who is slightly smaller.
I also did check that they had 2 bladders. Mine does (the M), but at least one of the smalls was missing a bladder. At checkout, the lady opened all zippers and checked for the bladders on both sides, so they must have know that someone was taking them out. :-(
They did have 2-3 smalls left at this Cabelas (none listed online at their website though). But one was missing the bladder on one side I think.
the_november_rain was right, looks like im going to have to start calling and try to hunt down a medium sized pack. looks like hamburg is completely sold out of palisades packs. the lady on the phone said they only have the blue ones left (approach). i guess ill start calling down the list of stores.
sweet! i found one in allen, tx (they had 2 left) and i was able to order it over the phone. a customer service rep i spoke with on the phone gave me a list of stores that had some mediums left. ill type it out below and u can get the phone numbers from the link i posted above. each store had very few left and im sure they are packed with shoppers. im sorry but i didnt get a list for small and large sizes but the smalls are definitely easier to come by. dont forget to have them check for 2 bladders!

Not as cheap as Cabela's, but if you counter in shipping &/or taxes I imagine it comes out to around the same!
Personally, I've decided to get a webmaster harness & another pack [ either approach or singletrek ] instead of the pallisade. [ ends up being only a $10 difference or so ] I'd rather have each separately, I think.
@sangmort - Shoot. I had already ordered a Palisade (M) and an Approach (M) with the 5% coupon at http://www.backcountryk9.com. Still happy that I didn't spend the retail price of 199.98 + taxes + shipping though!
edit: Sale at www.backcountryk9.com looks to be over now.
However, I was able to get a small from the Cabelas in Dundee, MI. The man that helped me did say they have a few in stock. I forgot to ask how many and what size
@ayk - Looks like you're right! The coupon still works, but the sales are done. Damn, I didnt get a chance to order either! [ was waiting to discuss with hubby ]
Oh well, guess I'll just wait til the next sale. ~
damn, cabelas wasnt able to charge my credit card on the phone since it has a canadian billing addres, kind of strange because i can order stuff off their website with no problems. at least now they are going to send it to the lacey, wa store so i can pick it up there. its going to take a few weeks though so thats good since i can probably head back down there at that time. i cant wait for them to open their new store which is about 1.5hrs closer to me (instead of over 3).
The closest one to me is 2 hours. Thankfully the small Palisades I bought fits not one but both of my big dogs! (If I was thinking, which I wasn't, I would have bought both packs the day I saw them but no, I had to wait until the next day and one was already gone.) I was really excited about that since I thought I was going to have to buy another pack for Sasha. I rotate which big dog I take with me on hikes so having just one harness/pack for now works out. I find it funny that the small Palidases fits my two 50 pounders with some wiggle room. They both have a 27 inch chest and I can synch the straps down a bit. I guess a medium probably would fit better, but the small works out good enough for me.
I found the Palisades, Approach and Singletrack on sale here: http://www.backcountryedge.com/dog-gear.aspx The Web Master is not on sale though. Free shipping on all of these items, but I don't know how reputable the site is. Anyways,
Palisades small and large $89.95 Approach XXS, XS, small and large $59.95 Singletrack small, medium and large $66.95
There's a couple other Ruff Wear items on sale as well, and I'm a bit miffed that they don't have the Palisades or Approach in medium. The Singletrack only comes in brown in the medium, but it's sizing is different that the other two. EDIT: If you join their site, you get 12% off your first order.
I might grab a small Approach for my other dog since it's only $10 more than a regular priced Web Master... I dunno though. I'm cheap and would like another $5 knocked off the price XP The sale does say new years weekend, so it might be over tomorrow.
Here's a picture of my 50 pound dog and the small Palisades.
I guess the small Approach would work for her and her sister since both have the same girth, surprisingly. Juneau (pictured) is a lot thinner but has a deeper chest while Sasha has a shallower chest but is shaped more like a barrel.
Going to get Juno a webmaster harness for spring hiking on more populated trails. I don't really see much point in asking such a small dog to pack on a day hike, especially at the expense of her maneuverability with the width of the packs. It's steep and the trees are dense, and Juno is little and lithe. Reilly & I can carry. Rei's pack is the Kelty K9 Chuckwagon- it's not as nice a harness base as the ruffwears, but I like that you can smallify the bags with a bellows zipper to keep the load close to her body. One day we walked to the farm and I let Reilly carry the eggs home in cartons in her pack. Shes very reliable! a mile & a half home and didnt break a one!
