Was ok until the guy got to the ears....with the lip licking I am thinking this dog is really tolerant but not necessarily happy about the overly ambitious ruffing around the ears. I think a good scratch on the chest would be a nicer thing for this Kai. Snf
Its hard for me to come to the same conclusion, because the cameraman gets very close to the dog at the same time the ears are being ruffled two out of three times. It could be that the dog didn't like the camera in its face. The first time the dog's ears are messed with (around 0:02) the dog doesn't lick its lips. But the camera man gets in close at 0:05 and the dog licks his lips, then he backs off, then comes in again at 0:14 and more licking occurs...
Yea, I had a similar thought about the camera making him uncomfortable.
I also agree that he seems sensitive about his ears too.
To me, it looks like he was ok with the one hand love'n, but when the guy added his second hand the Kai started to show some signs of stress (hesitance, air-mouthing, larger eyes, then lip-licking)... Then the camera gets in his face and the dog is like "ok, this is all too much attention for me."
I just thought this was an interesting example of the subtleties of dog communication and how we need to all listen (with our eyes and ears) to the dogs we meet more closely... especially our very subtle and sensitive NK.
Thanks for the video....a good example of things to look for. I know I have been an oaf to a dog at one time or another not realizing it. Things happen so fast we tend to overlook the subtle discomfort dogs exhibit when there is no stop footage and we want everyone to see how great a dog is.
Had the sound off.....Good point about the camera poeticdragon.
Ever since getting Conker, I've been forced to learn how to interpret canine body language correctly in order to avoid putting him into a situation that'll flip him out. I'm still learning a good part of it, occasionally I see something that baffles me. I do like how you post these vids every now and then (like the one of the PPD dog some time ago) since I always learn something from them.
It would be interesting to see if the dog reacted the same way without knowledge of being recorded and having that extra influence and then determine if the ear ruffling was too much as well.
Very obvious that it was giving signals that something (ears or camera or both) was bothering him.
One of my pack is camera-shy, but the others dont seem to mind the attention as much. I can easily believe the camera/phototographer is a factor, esp since he is looking at the camera as he stresses. If he was more upset about the petting, Id expect more whale eye. I think the dog is more concerned about the ogling voyeur.
Also, from the title of the video, it looks like this dog is up for adoption. The explanation states that he's quite shy and a bit fearful, but warms up to people who take care of him after a while. Looks like he's in a foster situation.
Yeah, I thought he was uncomfortable with either the ear touching or the camera. I hope he finds a good home too!
Yesterday at the vet someone was petting Toby who is tolerant of it, but not into it. Toby kept turning his head away, then yawning, and the guy took that as encouragment, rather than Toby saying "enough, I don't like this." Then he got his face down there for "kisses" and Toby started his licking his (own) lips and yawning more, so I took him away. But yeah, it was clear to me anyway that Toby was not enjoying the attention though the other dog owner was clueless.
