People in Japan don't worry so much about the Kanji meaning, it is more about the name. For example if there is Yukiko, no one thinks of her as snow child it is just Yukiko. It is also hard to explain about dog names. Sometimes a dog would have a persons name but it kind of has to match?? When I was a kid we had a female Puli called Suzy and it fit just fine but I have never met a male dog named Paul for example. A lot of names that sound cool to westerners don't to Japanese. I am a big fan of having any Japanese name passed by a native Japanese speaker first. I am sure Kazuko (my wife) would have a look for anyone. You don't want to end up like the American woman who had the Kanji for supermarket tattooed on her!!
Jeffnkazuko has a point- you ever see those baby name books about what names mean? (Name) means "exalted one or flower" or something...My name is Chrystal- it could mean a mineral structure, but nobody thinks of that. I am just Chrystal.
@jeffnkazuko lol, i think there is a website for bad kanji tattoos. I feel bad for those people, lol :-SS Thanks also for having Kazuko look at our dog's name. I talked to my calligraphy sensei and she suggested we might use 彩 which means colourful.. So Saigo is 彩剛 = colourful and strong.
@jeffnkazuko@WrylyBrindle Sure, the meaning isn't what people think of. I agree. I was just including the kanji/meaning in some of the suggestions I put up because I thought it was interesting. I can edit my post and take those out, though, if it's in poor taste to have them there?
no, not poor taste! its discussion- getting to think of things we hadnt taken time to think of before. I say leave it as is! and Thank you! Meanings are fun. I added a name to Matsu's registered name because i liked the meaning- "Kanjiki" = traditional japanese snowshoes. Its not a name at all, but I like it for his reg name because he has big webbed feet and I do a lot of snowshoeing with him. its all good.
Yeah, sorry I didn't mean that it was in bad taste. People know the meaning of the kanji in their names but it more the name itself that counts. Sometimes parents will use hiragana to spell their kids name just to be different. Some people think that is cool too.
