We haven't really had issues with Akuma, we love his personality. He marks trees and stuff outside here and there but not too crazy (such as every 3 feet or the like). He only tried humping once or twice when we first got him and he had just left a home with an in heat female but nothing since. He's very clean inside, no accidents at our place or when he's visited our families' homes. So we haven't had any problems yet. Maybe more issues come up with multiple dogs and females in heat in the same house (such as howling).
Out of curiosity, I wanted to see if folks who have intact males can comment on an observation:
My neutered shiba takes a special interest whenever they see this large intact male in our neighborhood --it's at least 90# and actually looks much more like a Weim but the owners said it's a silver lab. I'm not sure if this male has a musky scent or what but Riku would follow him downwind excitedly until he's out of sight, as if he's stalking the other dog. Riku doesn't do this w/ other fixed animals in the neighborhood.
Conker does that with the neighbors Mastiff. He's got intense manlove for Ruger. I have no idea what it really is, but it's hilarious to watch Conker around him. Ruger is one of the only big male dogs that Conker actually likes. (Ironically, all the ones he doesn't like do not have balls...)
My puppy started acting strange for last couple of days. He barked and barked(he is usually very calm), stick his head out from our neighbor's fence(their fence is cattle fence), or tried to get out by digging with frustrated high pitch voice. I wonder if there are any females in heat or he just found rabbits around....
I wonder if it's a phase they go through. Our JA pup started to experiment more with her voice around 7 months (shortly after she was spayed) and the days got longer. She went on alarm mode and started to bark when UPS/FedEx/USPS comes by, or when a dog walks in front of our house/her territory, or when my husband gets home from work. After a while she figured out no one pays attention to her so she dialed it down.
These days she still "trash talks" with the neighbors dogs, but otherwise back to her calm self...
@rikumom to answer you're question, i don't think Riku is weird I guess I attribute it to the same way we spot people from afar and find them interesting. Dogs are social creatures with opinions just like us, so I just assume they work similar in that regard.
Having said that, Toki always always always wants to go say hi to every dog he sees. About a quarter of those dogs are males that hate him, (and i think Toki gets a lot of pleasure by seeing a reaction out of other dogs, lol), and a quarter of those same aforementioned dogs Toki doesn't like...but he still wants to say "hello, but not really" to.
I imagine as he ages, he will encounter more dogs he does not like, since he is still a bit of a puppy. (1.5 years)
He has only met ONE female dog that Toki did not like. (and this is coming from a dog who likes most dogs, and "flirts" with ALL females he meets). That was another japanese akita in waxahachi. It was weird.

Is my shiba just weird??
