  • I signed up for membership! :D I look forward to the newsletters.
  • I've made the Hokkaido Ken Hozonkai aware of HANA, and they are interested in seeing how the club develops. Some of the members have expressed their support, and some are also open to the idea of possibly testing some of the breeding stock.
  • @TheWalrus That's great! :) I'm glad to hear there is support from the Hokkaido Ken Hozonkai. Thank you!
  • That's so cool! Thanks!
  • Wow, that is so cool! I didn't think that would ever be a possibility!
  • Also, it took a few months, but they have now agreed to accept foreign members and let them register their kennels as well.
I passed on the information about CEA, which of course no one knew about or has ever seen. They have seen PRA though, and heart murmurs.
  • I'm thinking we can submit the genetic testing for CEA and PRA at the same time to OptiGen http://www.optigen.com/opt9_test_prcd_pra.html

It looks like we could get 20% off by testing both, and LOOK: they list Hokkaido under CEA!!! http://www.optigen.com/opt9_price.html
  • Wow, that's great news all around!
  • Very very nice. :D
  • Man, this is all so awesome. It's really cool to watch this project grow. I hope everything goes well! Looks like you're all way ahead of the curve. I hope to contribute in the future! :p

I would like to do something like this with the Kishu in North America. It looks like they're the only breed without an active club/group here now... I know Carleen has something set up with the AKC but I don't know if she'd be as cooperative as HANA seems with one another so far.

    You guys are great. :)

NICE! That is some awesome news Shigeru! Thank you very much for being our advocate over there. Your help truly is invaluable :)

I'm wondering how found Optigen the CEA in hokkaido breed???
In Japan is not check, no test.... very interesting...

Anybody knows hokkaido who has CEA eye disease? I know 1 hokkaido who has Cataract, but I've never heard about other eye problems ...

My dogs have prcd-PRA genetic eye test and the Laboratory (who I use) doesn't make CEA test.

  • Wow, it's looking up!
  • This may be another lab that offers CEA testing? $80 ?

    https://www.pawprintgenetics.com/products/diseases/92/
  • Is there a lab in Finland or something that does CEA, MHC, PRA, etc all in one genetic testing? I recall someone mentioned an all in one genetic test but can't remember where...
  • Are you thinking of this one?

I'm kinda afraid of them. LOL. So many tests to keep track of. ie. If the test finds a marker vs. the actual disease gene, if there are mutations that doesn't apply for that breed but someone presumes clear, etc.

I don't see CEA under Hokkaido when I typed it in.
  • Hmm, I didn't think about that...good to know
  • I sent the swabs from Seta and Maru to a Slovakian Laboratory:
    http://www.slovgen.sk (only slovakian language...)

I hope the results will be OK :-)))

Price is 35 EURO (around 45 USD) for CEA test, but other test (PRA) is in same price.

Ouah ! Very cheaper than here...

  • I may have missed this, but while reading @TheWalrus's blog today, I saw the post about @brada1878 getting 2 puppies for HANA! A B&T and a brindle, no less! Awesome! :D
  • Those two pups have survived nearly a week here without me or the other dogs ending their punk-ass lives.
Seriously though, they are cute and extremely friendly litter buggers. I just wish Hokka pups weren't so loud. I don't need to wake up every morning at 4:30 to watch the sun rise with you!
  • @TheWalrus - I would be happy to wake up at 4:30 to watch the sunrise with those pups! Send them to Virginia!!! :-D

But seriously, I am so excited to see this project getting off the ground. I just wish that I could contribute more now. But hopefully in a couple of years I can help get the East Coast HANA off the ground!

    OMG!!! I'm falling in love!!!
@TheWalrus: please find me a lovely cutie brindle girl :x

Of course I love my 2 whites so much but brindle is my big dream!!!

  • *sighs* mmmm...brindle really IS the dream, isn't it? :) Just the best! ;)

Go, HANA! (and HANA East, someday!)
  • @TheWalrus--are they louder than Shikoku pups??
  • In super excited for these kids to get to the states. Thanks Shigeru for making this happen.
