Bear Hunting Training-American Akita and Laika and Other 'Working' Akita videos

Edit2: Seems im just going to have to post just links. Just copy link and paste it into another window
Edit:Links are not working, going to try to fix that.
They are using a chained bear for training and a wounded moose, for people sensitive to this kind of training here is a warning in advance.

Recently I have become fascinated and absolutely smitten with the American Akita, however it has been difficult to find many good videos of seeing some being worked, especially since I am interested in getting a working prospect one eventually in the future. So after some searching I came across a youtube channel called MatagiKenReal. Seems they are breeders of both AAs and Laikas but I thought these were very interesting since I'm interested in hunting large game with Kuma, but its great to see the AA still got it. If I could just decipher russian i would definitely want to get a pup from these guys.

Thanks for fixing that! Cool to see the videos--I'm going to watch them a bit later!

I don't really like seeing the chained bear, but....
  • Sorry I understand this may show my ignorance here, but the clip with the chained bear was really quite disturbing, and although I am not asking for the reasons why they do it- I do not think its necessary at all. On a lighter note I like the idea of Akitas doing sled work, that is cool.
  • That bear has no teeth or claws. There is so much wrong with this 'test' that I can't even begin to go on about it.

Yeah, I was pretty upset about the bear test too--I noticed the no teeth. Ugh. I went to show it to my husband and he told me not to click it so the person doesn't get more views on it, and I realized he was right, so I didn't. (It's a Russian video so I doubt it will make much difference in practices whether it was viewed or not, but I decided probably all I could do was not give the video more hits by not viewing it).

To me it's no "test" to let dogs go after a chained and mutilated bear....

We did like the pulling videos, though, esp. the car one! The Akita I had many years ago in Alaska loved to pull sleds or pull me on skis!
  • Even in Russia (with old houndsmen who run Laiki), they do not like this chained bear approach to "testing" their dogs.

I recently saw one staged in Argentina with a bear on chain w no teeth and claws fighting 2 dogo. Really not cool.

And I am a bear hunter...
  • I imagine that dogs tested or trained on bear this way don't really last long in the field. Since the bear is mutilated, the dogs quickly learn that being mauled is scary but harmless. Heck, in the 3rd bear video the akita stops to catch its breath and remains within a foot of the bear, do that with any wild bear and that dog is as good as dead.

On another note, AA have become such a popular breed to mush with that some people have been producing AA husky crosses to run in their teams. The breed is also starting to get listed as a sled dog breed on some websites and books, sometimes with a very construed breed history.
  • Yeah, the bear fights are pretty sick.. The gull terr fights of India are even worse.
  • I don't really agree with the chained bear method either especially since they declawed and defanged, but I didn't want to judge it being that this is another country and I am unfamiliar with bear hunting methods and training. But the bitework vid was what really got me I hoping that they will be used more in that eventually. I love the sports that involve it.

@Calia I've been seeing that to the more i look into it to, I do wonder eventually what will it lead to. I think they look quite in their element doing any kind of pulling work.
  • Yep, vey low brow stuff (chained bear). Not only could a "real" bear run the dog down, he would rip open the AA's belly/ribs if it tried the "rolling" move on a "real" bear.

I have mixed feelings on the chained bear test.

Supposedly the ones who actually attended said the outsider's view is misconstrued and and most dogs fail the test. People from northern Europe and western Europe travel to Russia and Bealrus to participate.

On the other hand, there is a serious welfare problem with using them; and public image problem. I cringe every time when someone from Germany or France publishes a report on those hunting tests.
  • @souggy Thanks for the info! I'm still on the search for Akitas doing other jobs and if someone wants to delete the bear hunting videos since most people don't approve of them I will remove the links.
  • Cat is out of the bag. For a long time. If not here, it would be somewhere else.
